Every repertory page is written in a private-looking code. A rubric reads puls., sep., sil., staph., stram., sulph. and a student new to the book has to stop and decode each one before the line means anything. The shorthand is not arbitrary and it is not decorative: it is what made a printed repertory physically possible, and it survived into digital software because practitioners had already learned to think in it.
This guide decodes the abbreviations. It explains how they are constructed, lists the hundred you will meet most often, decodes the cryptic ones practitioners search for most, and flags the pairs that are genuinely easy to confuse. Every remedy links to its full classical entry, free.
How Homeopathic Remedy Abbreviations Are Built
Three rules account for nearly every abbreviation in a repertory.
The dot marks a truncation. sulph. is Sulphur cut short; thuj. is Thuja occidentalis cut short. This is ordinary English abbreviation practice, nothing more. A handful of names that are already short complete words — apis, aloe, opium — appear without the dot.
A hyphen introduces the qualifier. Where a remedy name has a base and a modifier, the abbreviation keeps both and joins them with a hyphen: nat-m. is Natrium muriaticum, kali-c. is Kalium carbonicum, carb-v. is Carbo vegetabilis, pic-ac. is Picricum acidum. This is the part that carries the clinical distinction — calc., calc-p. and calc-s. are three different medicines, and the two letters after the hyphen are the entire difference between them.
The base name is the Latin one. Abbreviations are built from the pharmacopoeial Latin, not the common English name, which is why bell. is Belladonna rather than "deadly nightshade" and ip. is Ipecacuanha rather than "ipecac". Spelling conventions vary between editions — Natrium and Natrum, Kalium and Kali, Silicea and Silica all appear in print — but the abbreviation stays stable across them.
One thing the abbreviation never encodes is the remedy's weight in the rubric. That is carried by the typography: bold, italic and plain in Kent's three grades, five typographic degrees in Boger's BBCR. Spellings follow the classical pharmacopoeial forms used in the source books; where an author writes Natrum for Natrium or Kali for Kalium, the abbreviation is unchanged.
Cryptic Abbreviations Practitioners Look Up Most
Some abbreviations give no clue at all to a reader who has not met the remedy. These are the ones practitioners most often stop to look up — small remedies with real clinical niches, whose names simply do not survive truncation.

A few deserve a sentence of context. arund. — Arundo mauritanica, the reed — is a classical hay-fever remedy known for intolerable itching in the nostrils and palate. castm. is Castoreum canadense, the beaver secretion, used in the older literature for hysterical and exhausted states. euphr., Euphrasia officinalis or eyebright, is the acute coryza remedy with bland nasal discharge and burning tears — the mirror image of Allium cepa. chlol. is Chloralum hydratum, chloral hydrate, and tritic. is Triticum repens, couch grass, a urinary remedy. diosm., Diosma lincaris, is one of the small remedies whose repertory presence is thin but whose materia medica entry still repays reading.
Abbreviations That Are Easy to Confuse
These pairs share a visual shape but are unrelated medicines. Misreading one for the other changes the prescription entirely.

How to Look Up Any Abbreviation
The list above covers the abbreviations that recur; the classical repertories between them contain thousands more. Two habits resolve the rest:
- Search the abbreviation directly. Similia's free materia medica and repertory both accept the abbreviation and the full Latin name, so typing
pic-ac.orPicricum acidumreaches the same remedy. - Read the entry, not just the name. Decoding
castm.into "Castoreum canadense" tells you almost nothing clinically. Two minutes in Boericke or Clarke tells you whether the remedy belongs in the case at all — which is the actual reason to look an abbreviation up.
