Volume I — Special Symptomatology
(White Snake Boot.)
Description. — A perennial plant, with rough, slightly pubescent stem, about two feet high. It has white, aromatic flowers, in small corymbs. The root is the officinal portion. It has a pleasant aromatic odor and a bitterish taste. It gives up its medicinal virtues to alcohol and boiling water. It should be gathered in September.
Officinal Preparations. — Tincture of the fresh root; dilutions.

° Restlessness and morbid watchfulness. 0 Calms the irritability of the nervous system. 0 Debility and irritability of the nervous system. 0 Relieves tremors, jactitations, chorea, and hysteria. 0 Apthous stomatitis in females and children. (Hill.) c Burning at the stomach in females a few weeks before confinement.
0 Nursing sore mouth, with great nervousness. ° Nervous cough.
Volume II — Special Therapeutics
The late Dr. B. L. Hill once recommended this plant as a specific in aphthous stomatitis in women and children ; also for the burning in the stomach with “nursing sore mouth/’ before and after confinement.
A few physicians, acting on his recommendation, claim to have used it successfully. The eclectics speak highly of it as a nervine, classing it with Scutellaria and Cypripedium, alleging that it removes restlessness and morbid watchfulness, morbid irritability of the nervous system, tremors, jactitations, chorea and hysteria. No provings have been made. When you meet with cases of aphthous disease, concomitant with nervous erethism, it will afford you good opportunity to test its value. It is used as a wash, as well as internally.
