Boericke's summary of the sphere is the most compact in the literature: especially indicated in tardy dentition and its attendant troubles, in bone disease and non-union of fractured bones, and in the anaemias that follow acute illness and chronic wasting disease. He then adds the anatomical signature — a special affinity where bones form sutures or symphyses — and the general that governs everything else: all its symptoms are worse from any change of weather. Numbness and crawling are its characteristic sensations.

Clarke widens the frame in one sentence worth memorising: Calc phos corresponds to defective nutrition, whether of childhood, puberty, or of old age, with a predisposition to glandular and bone disease, spinal curvature, slow walking and rickets. The Constitution: Thin, Sallow, and Stretched

Allen's opening line is the fastest portrait: the remedy suits persons of anaemic and dark complexion, dark hair and eyes; thin spare subjects, instead of fat, with children emaciated, unable to stand, slow in learning to walk, and a sunken, flabby abdomen.

Nash explains the shift chemically. The phosphorus element in the preparation, he writes, seems to change the temperament: the remedy keeps its power over tardy bone development but acts best in spare subjects instead of fat. So a sickly child with fontanelles open too long or reopening, spare and anaemic, points here.

Clarke supplies the colour — less chalky-white than the Calc carb patient, more dirty-white or brownish. Boericke and Allen call the abdomen sunken and flabby, Clarke and Kent large and flabby; all four record the want of tone. Kent's picture is of flabby, shrunken, emaciated children with pale, waxy skin, losing flesh, legs not strong enough to support the body, or behind in mental development.

The Mind: Discontent, Weak Memory, Complaints Worse from Thinking

Two of this remedy's mental symptoms are unusually useful.

The first is discontent that moves. Boericke gives it in four words — "always wants to go somewhere" — alongside peevishness and forgetfulness after grief and vexation. Clarke fills it out: the patient wants to be at home, and when at home wants to go out; goes from place to place. It is not Arsenicum's anguished driving about the room but a low-grade dissatisfaction with wherever the patient happens to be.

The second is stranger and more valuable: complaints are worse when thinking of them. Clarke, Allen and Nash all record it, and Kent states the mechanism plainly — thinking of complaints causes them to appear or increase. In practice this shows up as a patient whose symptoms multiply during the consultation itself.

Underneath both is exhaustion of the intellect. Clarke calls the mental state one of weakness — weak memory, inability for mental exertion — which is why he finds the remedy appropriate for the effects of mental strain. Kent is sharper: the mind shows above all a tired and weak brain, dreading mental exertion and suffering in the head from it, with a note that fits the adolescent as well as the child — she seeks solitude to commune with her thoughts and to shun the exertion of society. Clarke's causation list reads like an intake form: over-growth, lifting, ascending, over-study, grief, disappointed love, unpleasant news, getting wet.

Bone, Dentition and the Fontanelles

Fontanelles remain open too long (Boericke), and the cranial bones are soft and thin. Clarke adds a physical sign: delayed closure or re-opening of fontanelles, and a skull so thin and soft that it almost cracks like paper when pressed upon, mostly in the occiput. Allen records fontanelles and sutures that remain open so long, or close and reopen. Kent frames it developmentally — if the head bones are slow in forming, or do not keep pace with the growth of the child, this remedy is often called for. Clarke also gives the structural detail that separates the two Calcareas at a glance: Calc carb has an open anterior fontanelle; Calc phos has both open, especially the posterior.

Dentition is slow and the teeth decay fast. Boericke: complaints during teething, teeth develop slowly, rapid decay of teeth, with swollen tonsils and adenoid growths in the same picture. Clarke adds teeth sensitive to chewing, boring pain at night worse from anything warm or cold, and convulsions without fever during dentition.

The spine is weak. Allen describes a spine disposed to curvature, especially to the left, unable to support the body, with a neck too weak to support the head. Clarke specifies the same left-sided curvature, with the lumbar vertebrae bending to the left, and names spina bifida.

Fractures that will not knit. Kent calls non-union and swollen condyles symptoms accepted by all textbooks as strong indications; Allen writes "non-union of bones; promotes callous" and cross-references Symphytum, as do Clarke and Nash — the last of them blunt about it, an excellent remedy for broken bones where the bones refuse to knit. Growing Pains and the Fast-Growing Adolescent

Kent lists growing pains at night in fast-growing children directly among the indications, and elsewhere describes aching in the bones "like growing pains", with intense boring pains in the knees and long bones and pain in the tibia with soreness. He notes that the most severe tearing, shooting pains are in the lower limbs, and offers a reason worth remembering: the lower limbs are always cold to the knees, and in this remedy the cold parts are the suffering parts.

Allen supplies the adolescent context — girls at puberty, tall, growing rapidly, with a tendency of bone to soften or the spine to curve — plus acne in anaemic girls with vertex headache and flatulent dyspepsia better for eating. Kent adds that growing children on this remedy suffer chronic throat trouble, every cold settling in the tonsils; Boericke's weary when going upstairs completes it.

Kent opens his section on women with a memorable line: the woman has no better friend than Calc phos — for a girl slow in maturing, and for the painful menstruation that follows taking cold at the first period. Boericke's particulars belong to the same stretched constitution: menses too early, excessive and bright in girls, and leucorrhoea like the white of an egg.

The School Headache

Boericke locates the headache anatomically: worse near the region of the sutures, from change of weather, of school children about puberty, with two recurring concomitants — abdominal flatulence, and the head hot with smarting of the roots of the hair.

Kent gives the clinical scene. The dull headaches of schoolchildren — always come home from school with headache. The head is sensitive to a jar, to pressure, to the hat; the patient wants it washed in cold water, and wants to be quiet and alone.

Clarke ties it to the mental weakness and names the differential — school headaches in children, "in this it is like Nat. m." — and records the headache of schoolgirls with diarrhoea, which Allen repeats, plus one genuinely peculiar modality: headache with a craving for tobacco smoke, which relieves it. Nash confirms it from clinical use: very useful in the headaches of anaemic schoolgirls, where the choice sometimes lies between this remedy and Natrum muriaticum.

Boericke's Nat-mur headache is the anaemic headache of schoolgirls in a nervous, discouraged, broken-down subject, throbbing as if a thousand little hammers were knocking on the brain, classically from sunrise to sunset, with consolation aggravating. The Calc phos headache is duller and weather-driven, seated near the sutures.

Digestion: Smoked Meats, Flatulence and the Spluttering Stool

The appetite symptom is a keynote in the strict sense: strange, specific, repeatedly confirmed. Boericke: craving for bacon, ham, salted or smoked meats. Clarke calls "craving for fat bacon" in children a well-verified characteristic. Nash reports it in the child's own idiom: instead of eggs, the little patient wants "ham rind" — a very queer symptom, he says, but a genuine one.

Around it sits a feeble, flatulent digestion. Boericke: the infant wants to nurse all the time and vomits easily; much flatulence, temporarily relieved by sour eructations; and at every attempt to eat, colicky pain, with soreness and burning around the navel.

The stool is as characteristic as the craving. Boericke: green, slimy, hot, sputtering, undigested, with fetid flatus, with diarrhoea from juicy fruits or cider and during dentition. Nash explains the word: the flatulence, of which there is much, makes a loud spluttering noise as the stool passes. Kent adds diarrhoea from fruit, ice cream, cold drinks — or from vexation. Clarke draws the comparison out: Calc phos stools are green and slimy or hot and watery, whereas Calc carb's are generally watery, white and mixed with curds.

One further indication is odd enough to be worth memorising: fistula in ano alternating with chest symptoms, recorded by Boericke, Clarke and Allen alike, and by Kent as fistula in tuberculous subjects.

Rheumatism and the Weather Modality

Every author makes the same point: this remedy lives and dies by the barometer.

Boericke's summary is the shortest — worse from exposure to damp, cold weather and melting snow; better in summer and in a warm, dry atmosphere. Allen adds changeable weather, east winds and mental exertion. Nash sharpens the season: rheumatic troubles worse in autumn or spring, especially when the air is cold and damp from melting snow. Clarke records that a slight draught causes rheumatic pain, that every cold brings pains in joints and sutures, and that the rheumatism clears in summer and returns in cold weather.

Kent supplies the motion axis: the complaints are generally better during rest, come on during motion, and are greatly aggravated by exertion, with marked sensitivity to a jar. Two pains are worth having by heart: Boericke's soreness in the sacro-iliac symphysis as if broken, and his rheumatic pain in the neck from a draught of air. Both sit where the affinity for sutures and symphyses predicts.

The head sweat is the discriminator most often quoted between Calc phos and Silicea, and both Allen and Nash note it. Nash: you would also think of Silicea in one of these poor subjects, but in Calc phos the sweaty head is not a prominent symptom, while with Silicea it is markedly so. Allen compresses it into one clause of his Relations — similar to Silicea, "but sweat of head is wanting". Take it as a leaning rather than a rule, because the sources do not quite agree with themselves: Nash's own opening summary line for this remedy reads "tardy closing or re-opening fontanelles in slim, emaciated children, with sweaty heads", and Kent records perspiration of the scalp and copious night sweats. What the comparison claims is narrow: the head sweat is not the prominent feature here that it is in Silicea. Two Further Differentials

Versus Phosphorus

The overlap is the tall, fast-growing, narrow-chested adolescent with fragile bone. Boericke's Phosphorus suits tall, slender, narrow-chested persons with thin transparent skin, and he names tuberculosis in tall, rapidly-growing young people alongside bone fragility and destruction of bone, especially the lower jaw and tibia. What separates them is temperament, not build: Phosphorus is defined by great susceptibility to external impressions — light, sound, odours, touch, thunderstorms — and by thirst for very cold water vomited as soon as it warms in the stomach. Versus Tuberculinum

Boericke's Tuberculinum suits light-complexioned, narrow-chested subjects with lax fibre and low recuperative powers, very susceptible to changes in the weather, always tired, with aversion to work, a wish for constant change, rapid emaciation and enlarged tonsils. The resemblance is real, but Tuberculinum's keynote is symptoms constantly changing while well-selected remedies fail to improve, with cold taken from the slightest exposure; Calc phos is stable, slow and structural. And Allen records the relationship directly — Calc phos acts best after Tuberculinum, as it does after Arsenicum and Iodum — which makes the pair sequential as often as competitive. Calc Phos as a Tissue Salt

Calcarea phosphorica has a second life in the biochemic tradition. Boericke's entry opens by calling it one of the most important tissue remedies, and Clarke records the history: the remedy was proved and tested clinically and then adopted by Schüssler as his leading antipsoric, after which a number of valuable indications were added by him and his followers.

Which indications those were, Clarke does not enumerate, and none of the classical authors read here sets out a biochemic schema — so the accurate statement is a narrow one. The biochemic tradition works the same substance in low trituration; the classical use follows the totality set out above; and Boericke's own dose note spans both ranges: first to third trituration, with higher potencies often more effective. Which route a case calls for is a prescribing judgement, not a formula.

One relationship note: Boericke gives Ruta and Hepar as complementary, Clarke and Allen give Ruta, and Allen adds the sequence — acts best before Iodum, Psorinum, Sanicula and Sulphur, and after Arsenicum, Iodum and Tuberculinum.
