Hecla lava

Volume I — Special Symptomatology

(The lava and scoria thrown out from Mount Hecla, in Iceland.) Description. — Hecla lava, according to Prof. Morris, of University College, London, has for general constituents, silica, alumina, lime, and magnesia, with some oxide of iron; sometimes it contains anorthite and other minerals.

Officinal Preparations. — Triturations; dilutions from the 3x. Analogues. — Anisum, Chamomilla, Ipecacuanha, Mercurius, Pulsatilla. Phytolacca, Phosphorus, Sulphur, Stillingia.

Head.

The head bones, especially the jaw bones, swelled, and became so friable that when boiled they fell in pieces (in cattle.)

• Toothache and swelling about the jaws. {J. G. Wilkinson.)

Enormous exostoses of the jaws (in sheep).

The jaws and teeth are covered with a shining metallic crust (in cows).

Lumps on the jaw bones, so large as to cause dislocation and

death (in horses). The jaws were sometimes covered with large swellings, which

spread, and were of loose texture, and darker in color

than the bone (in cattle). Caries of the jaw bones, under the exostoses. 0 Gum abscesses from decayed teeth. ( Wilkinson.) ° Difficult teething, in children. {Ib.)

° Neuralgic pains in the cavities from which teeth had been extracted, {Holcombe. Cure with the 30th.)

0 Injury to the inferior maxillary of a scrofulous girl, which produced an immense abscess, and afterward great enlargement of the maxillary bone. {Holcombe.)

° Destructive syphilitic ulceration of the nasal bones. {Thompson.)

The thigh, and particularly the shinbones swelled and bulged (in cattle).

0 Myalgia, especially of the intercostal muscles. {Cate.)

Volume II — Special Therapeutics

This medicine, made by triturating the lava thrown up from Mount Ideela, was first introduced into practice by Dr. Wilkinson, of London. He narrated his experience in a letter to Dr. Holcombe, who read the letter before the American Institute in

It appears, according to local observers, that the horses, sheep, cows, etc., in the vicinity of the mountain, became diseased from eating the herbage upon which the scoriae had fallen. It affects the bones principally, causing immense exostoses, caries, etc., particularly of the bones of the head ,jaws, teeth, and legs.

It has been used successfully in both high and low potencies in similar diseases by Drs. Holcombe, Helmuth, Cate, and Thompson.
