Menispermum canadense — moonseed, yellow parilla — is a small American remedy from Hale's provings, botanically a cousin of Cocculus, and clinically a one-idea remedy done well. The idea is a bursting headache that owns the spine as well as the skull, wrapped in yawning, dryness and itching.
Boericke's whole frame fits in a line: "A remedy for megrim, associated with restlessness and dreams. Pain in spine. Dryness, itching all over. Dry mouth and throat."
This guide profiles Menispermum from Boericke, Clarke's Dictionary and T.F. Allen's Encyclopedia — a deliberately short study matching a short record. The originals can be read in full — Boericke's Menispermum, Clarke's Menispermum and Allen's Menispermum — through Similia's free digital materia medica.
The Proving and the State
Clarke notes that "very considerable doses were taken in the proving" — Dr Taylor working up to 220 drops of tincture, Dr Graham taking grains of menispermin — and that "the most notable symptom was an intense headache combined with aching all down the back," with yawning and stretching as the constant attendants. The botanical kinship with Cocculus shows in the spinal emphasis and the itching, though, as Clarke observes, "the Cocculus vertigo and intoxication were not elicited."
The temper of the prover is mildly disturbed rather than dramatic: low-spirited yet working rapidly; absent-minded with clear thoughts; quick-tempered, surly, stubborn — small print beside the headache.
The Symptom Picture
Head. The centre. "Pressure from within outward, with stretching and yawning and pain down back" (Boericke). The full proving entry: "intense headache, with feeling as if it would burst, with pain the whole length of the back," lasting three or four days, ameliorated by walking in the open air — and, in the prover's own record, relieved by Bryonia. The pain moves front to back: forehead and temples to occiput; worse during the night; with a feeling of fulness.
Back and limbs. "Dull pain the whole length of the back, with yawning and stretching"; aching in thighs, elbows and shoulders; aching in the bones of the legs lasting days; "legs sore, as if bruised" (Boericke). Allen preserves the prover's remark that the pains "resembled those caused by taking large doses of Quinine, and were relieved by a few doses of China" — a small clue filed under both remedies.
Dryness. "Dry mouth and throat" at night — parched without soreness; eyes dry and swollen at night; nostrils dry, the left especially, itching painfully with excoriating mucus. The tongue is swollen, yellow-coated and thickest at the base, feeling raw "as if burnt" — while Boericke records the paradox of "much saliva" beside it.
Skin. "Itching all over body, especially buttocks" and thighs, "worse warmth of bed" — the modality that pairs it with its dry, night-aggravated character.
Sleep. Restless, with troubled confused dreams and sudden starting from sleep; sleeping late and heavy, disinclined to rise; yawning and stretching binding the whole picture together. And the curiosity: dreams "of innumerable rats, which creep under my clothing."
Urine. High-coloured, scanty and hot; "white thready clouds floating through" (Clarke).
Key Modalities
Worse:
- Night — headache, dryness, swollen-eye feeling, hurried respiration
- Warmth of bed — the itching
- Morning waking — nausea
Better:
- Walking in open air — the headache's one reliable relief
Keynote Symptoms
- Bursting headache with pain the whole length of the back
- Pressure from within outward; forehead and temples to occiput
- Stretching and yawning accompanying headache and backache
- Dry mouth and throat at night; tongue swollen, yellow, raw as if burnt
- Itching all over, worse warmth of bed
- Legs sore as if bruised; aching in the bones
- Restless nights: troubled dreams, sudden starting
- Headache better walking in open air
Clinical Applications
Migraine and sick-headache. The remedy's home: the bursting from-within-out pain with its spinal echo and the yawning prodrome — worth remembering when a migraine patient stretches and yawns as the attack builds and walks it off in open air.
Headache-with-backache syndromes. Where the two pains arrive and leave together, few small remedies match the record this closely.
Night dryness and itching. As a supporting picture — the parched night mouth and bed-warmth itching confirm rather than lead.
Differential Diagnosis
Menispermum vs. Bryonia. Boericke's first comparison, and the prover's own palliative. Both have bursting headaches; Bryonia's is worse for every motion and better for pressure and stillness — the antithesis of a headache relieved by walking in open air. When the walking test is positive, Menispermum; when motion is intolerable, Bryonia.
Menispermum vs. Cocculus. The botanical cousin. Cocculus leads with vertigo, seasickness, the exhaustion of night-watching, and shares the spinal weakness and itching; Menispermum lacks the vertigo-intoxication entirely and leads with the bursting head-and-back pain.
Menispermum vs. China. The quinine-like limb pains relieved by China in the proving place the two side by side in bruised, aching states; China brings its periodicity, debility from fluid loss and hypersensitivity — a far larger picture around a shared sensation.
Repertorisation Tips
- Head; PAIN; bursting and Head; PAIN; pressing; outward
- Head; PAIN; extending; down back / with pain in back
- Generalities; STRETCHING; yawning and, with headache
- Mouth; DRYNESS; night and Throat; DRYNESS; night
- Skin; ITCHING; warmth of bed agg.
- Extremities; PAIN; sore, bruised; legs
- Head; PAIN; air, open; amel.; walking in
The confirming pattern is concomitance: head and back hurting together, yawning threading through, night dryness attending. Our beginner's guide to repertorisation sets out the method in more detail.
Deepening Your Study
- Boericke compresses the remedy into four lines that contain everything essential
- Clarke's Dictionary adds the proving history, the Cocculus comparison and the conditions
- T.F. Allen's Encyclopedia preserves the day-by-day proving — including the rats
