(Iodide of Calcium.)
Description.— Prepared by heating Calcium and Iodine vapor, or dissolving lime or the Carbonate of calcium in Hydriodic acid, evaporating, and fusing the residue in a closed vessel. It resembles the chloride. It melts below a red heat, and if in contact with the air is decomposed with the formation of lime and the separation of Iodine. It is very soluble and deliquescent.
The provings of Calcarea iodata so far are of little value. They do not afford any characteristic clue to its physiological effects. It is better to consult the provings of Calcarea and Iodine for indications.
Volume II — Special Therapeutics

This is a crystalline salt, soluble in water, but readily decomposed in the liquid state.
It has been used mostly in scrofula and tuberculosis. Administered in phthisis, it improves the appetite and digestion, and diminishes the cough and nightsweats. It has been used with considerable success in goitre and other glandular enlargements. The first decimal trituration is the best form for ordinary use.
