Authorities. [The classical dissertation of Hermann Wagner, "De Effectu Natri Sulphurici," Dorpat, 1853, contains a number of experiments with the drug (simple and combined with other drugs), a large number of analyses of urine and fæces, and general conclusions concerning the elimination of the salt; it is, however, needless to republish the tables of analyses entire, and general observations derived from them relate solely to the elimination of the drug and the variation in amount of urine, the latter varying inversely to the amount of the watery alvine discharges.]

FACE

In the morning after rising, great pain in maxillary joint, which is stiff, so that she could only open her mouth with difficulty; it seemed to her as though a bone were lying there which made it hard for her to open her mouth; after repeated and strong efforts it gradually disappeared, 2.
Boring as with a dull instrument, in the right angle of the lower jaw, afterwards in the right side of the forehead, then extending over the forepart of the head (seventh day), 3.

Teeth.

Raging, pulsating pain in an upper molar, left side; wakes her at 2 A.M., at the same time heavy feeling in the head, increased warmth of the whole body, and restlessness, so that she did not know where to lay her head, 2.
Jerking pain in an upper left molar, beginning while outdoors, but continuing afterwards in the house, 2.
Gums.
A movable, painless swelling on the outside of the gum of the left lower row, 2.
A blister on the upper gum, which suppurated and then dried, 2.
Her gums burn like fire, so that she cannot eat bread, 2.
Tongue.
Blisters, with a burning pain on the tip of the tongue; disappear soon, 2.*

THROAT

Objective.

STOMACH

Appetite.
Great appetite, without thirst (first and fifth days), 1. [210.]
A want of appetite; she is often obliged to yawn, and is thirsty (second morning), 2.

Immediately after taking the medicine, feeling in stomach as in voracious hunger, with boring pain; disappears after breakfast, 2.

Hypochondria.
Tension and sticking pain under the short ribs on the right side, when walking out of doors, 2.*
In the left hypochondrium, and left side of chest, sticking pain, as of a dull instrument, while sitting, in the forenoon, followed by sticking in right side of chest, but less violent (fifth day), 1.
Sticking and pulsating pain under the last short ribs, in the region of the liver, when walking in the morning (second day), 2.

Umbilical and Sides.
Bellyache around the umbilicus, while sitting at his desk (fourth day), 1.

Flatulent colic above umbilicus; flatus will not pass, evening (first day), 1.

STOOL

Diarrhœa.
Seems to promote stool in its primary effect, and to retard it in the secondary effect; the first doses cause soft stools, the later doses more solid ones, 2.
A renewed dose, after a long interval, causes diarrhœa, 2.
The first day after a renewed dose, diarrhœa; the second day, regular; the third, none at all; the fourth and fifth, regular; the sixth and seventh days, each time, two soft stools, preceded by pinching pain in the abdomen, 2.

Urethra.

Urine.
Urine increased, so that she had to get up several times during the night, 2.
Urine increased in quantity and passed more frequently than usual, the urine also seemed darker (seventh day), 3.

More urine than usual, with burning sensation when passing it ; at night, burning sensation when passing urine increased; is obliged to rise twice during the night on that account (first day), 2.

Menstruation almost at the usual time; more profuse on the second day, otherwise normal, 2.

Cough and Expectoration.

Frequent scraping in the larynx, and completely dry cough (eighteenth day), 3a.

Dry cough, with tickling in the trachea, for half an hour, 2.

Neck.
Stiffness in the left side of the nape of the neck (ninth day), 3a.

Trembling of the whole body, with spasmodic, visible motion of the muscles; most violent in the left side of the chest, with great apprehension and fear of a misfortune (third day), 1.
Weary, feeble, tired, as if she was going to be very ill, 2.

Weariness, with dulness of the head, towards 9 A.M. (second day), 1.

A number of small pimples on the inner surface of the right hand, which tempts him to scratch, 2.
Itching pimples on the inner side of the right forearm, that burn after being scratched, and disappear next day, 2.
Eruptions, Moist.
Several itching pimples on the right forearm, that burn after being scratched, and contain limpid water, during the catamenia, 2.
A blister, with inflamed edges and a burning pain, on one side of the left upper lip, lasting five days, 2.
Small vesicles break out on the under lip, which disappear after a short time, 2.
Small itching vesicles between the left thumb and forefinger, that contain water, 2.

Going to sleep of the great toe, right foot, in the morning, while sitting, 2.
Burning, with redness, on the back of both hands, as of nettles, afternoon till evening, 2.
On the outside of the left foot, near the little toe, a glow, as of fire, in the afternoon (second day), 1.
Drawing in the skin on the right zygoma (eighth day), 3a.
Drawing in the skin of the left leg (tenth day), 3.
Several stitches like fleabites in the left side of chest, and then again in the right side of the forehead, 2.
Tearing and sticking pain on the external surface of the humerus, in the evening, disappearing after rubbing, 2.
Crawling sensation in the finger-tips of the right hand, as if they were going to sleep, or becoming numb (first evening and second morning), 2.
Crawling, as of insects, on the back of the nose, several times (seventh and twenty-sixth days), 3a.
Sensation as though an insect were crawling on the back of the nose, not entirely relieved by wiping, and immediately becoming worse, lasting half an hour, while walking in the evening (eighth day), 3. [830.]

Sleepiness.

FEVER

Chilliness.
Cold shuddering chilliness, with thirst; he drank much water; the chilliness did not last long, and was not followed by either heat or sweat; the thirst lasted all the forenoon (third day), 1.
Chilly towards evening; she thinks she will get the fever, 2.
In the evening he is always chilly, without any thirst; he longs to be near the stove, 2. [880.]

In the morning, after walking, on an empty stomach, coldness and violent shaking chill, with a feeling of internal heat in the head and a pale face; she believes that her head must also be hot externally; the coldness lasts all day till evening, when moving or resting, but disappears after lying down, 2.
Internal coldness, with stretching and yawning (fourth day), 1.
She awakes about 1.30 A.M. shaking all over, and her teeth chatter as though she were out in the cold, with anxiety, for eight minutes, then she falls asleep again, 2. [890.]
She woke about 1.30 A.M. with shuddering over the whole body and chattering of the teeth, as if the cold; it lasted eight minutes, with anxiety, but afterwards she fell asleep again, 2.
Violent chill up the back, with chattering of teeth and shaking, without external coldness, 2.
Heat.
After vertigo, heat, rising from the body towards the head, constantly becoming more violent until sweat broke out on the forehead, after dinner (first day), 1.
She often has sudden flushes of heat towards evening, .
