MIND
- (Self-complacent thoughts and contempt of others)?; (after three hours and a half), 7.
- Combative, vindictive disposition all the week, and contempt for opponents (sixth day), 7.
HEAD
- Confusion and Vertigo.
- Head only somewhat confused, muddy (third day), 7.
- At times feels dizzy, 3.
- General Head.
- Heaviness of the head, in the morning (second day), 2.
- The head feels very heavy and large (first day), 2.
- Severe pain at intervals, extending from the posterior portion of both eyeballs through the head to just below the occipital protuberance, with sensation of pressure on the superior surface of the eyeballs, seeming to move the eye downward and outward (sixth day); this pressing and rolling sensation was felt more or less during the last two days, 1.
- Violent pain extending from the posterior portion of the right eye through the head to the occipital protuberance, with great soreness in the eyeball, very profuse lachrymation, and sensation as if the eye were as large as two eyes, continuing an hour until she fell asleep (sixth day), 2.
- Cannot describe the headache (first day), 2.
- Stupefying throbbing headache (from merely passing by, in the shadow of the tree), 6. [10.]
- The head feels worst near the warm stove, and when stooping it is almost impossible to hold the head down, relieved by being in the open air (first day), 2.
- Forehead.
- The head feels heavier about the forehead and eyes (first day), 2.
- On sitting down, pain and pressure deep in the anterior portion of the brain (after one hour), 7.
- Severe pain, deep in the brain over the right eye, lasting but a moment (fifth day), 7.
- Temples.
- Quite a severe pain in the right temporal region for some minutes (after three hours and a half), 7.
- Pressing pains in the right temple for a few minutes, at 1 P.M. (seventh day), 7.
- Severe pressing pain in the temporal region, soon passing off (after ten minutes), 7.
- Shooting pain through the left temple, recurring at intervals for three hours, and at times for several days, 3.
- Sides.
- Frequent returns of pains in the right side of the head (after nine hours and a half), .
EYE
- Objective.
- Eyes look dull and glassy; vessels congested; lids red, swollen, and inflamed (fifth day), 1.
- The eyes feel very heavy, larger than usual, painful and pressing out of the head, as if something was pressing on the top of the eyeballs, moving them downward and outward (first day), 2.*
- *Right eye very painful, feeling much larger and more protruded than the left , at 3 or 4 P.M. (fifth day), 1.
- Aching soreness in the eyeballs, which increases in severity during the evening, sometimes making him very dizzy, lasting from 4 or 5 P.M. till 10, aggravated by looking at a lighted candle and by motion; stooping or moving the head causes flow of tears (third day), 3.
- Catarrhal symptoms in the head; eyes seem sore, with more or less lachrymation, attributed to a cold, at 4 or 5 o'clock, and continuing through the evening (fourth day), 1.
- Looking at a lighted candle makes the eyes more painful, and causes profuse lachrymation (first day), 2.
- Eyes were aggravated by moving the head, by reading, by looking at a lighted candle and bright objects (sixth day), 1. [30.]
- The eyes feel more painful when near the warm stove ; with profuse lachrymation also when stooping (all this time the eyeballs are very sore, the right worse than the left), (first day), 2.*
- Eyes were relieved by sitting quietly before a wood fire on the hearth (sixth day), 1.
- The right eye worse than the left during the day, in the evening vice versâ (sixth day), 1.
- Left eye worse than the right towards and during the evening (fifth day), 1.
- Lids.
- Fine stitches in the external canthus of left eye, about 8.30 P.M., these stitches seem to resemble very fine needles (about half an inch long), and moved rapidly from below upward, lasting only a few seconds (tenth day), 1.
- Slight itching at external angle of the right eye, then at the lower border of the left eye (after ten minutes), 7.
- Lachrymal Apparatus.
- More or less lachrymation for some time, worse in the open air (sixth day), .
EAR
- Dulness of hearing, 3.
- Slight ringing in the ears and sensation of giddiness (after three hours and a half), 7.
FACE
- Face most dreadfully swollen, my eyes projecting far out of their sockets, and I could see only a faint glimmer of light with the left, 5.
- A painful burning on my face and arms , and particularly about my eyes, 5.
- Face around the eyes felt swollen at 6 A.M., very much puffed just below the superior tarsal cartilage in the afternoon (fifth day), 1.
- Sensation as if the skin was puckered or drawn up from the face, and about the nose, rendering me slightly dizzy (after ten minutes), 7.
- Lips.
- Inferior lip blistered and swollen, 3.
- The lips have been dry and chapped for three or four days, at 9 P.M. (eighth day), 7.
- The lips remained dry or chapped, often bleeding, for several weeks, a circumstance without precedent in my history, 7.
- Jaws. [50.]
- Slight pain in the lower jaw from the ears (after nine hours and a half), 7.
MOUTH
- Teeth.
- Sensation as if all the molar teeth on right side were loose, about 4.30 P.M., lasting thirty minutes (eighth day), 1.
- Aching in the bodies of all the teeth, lasting a minute, but returning every five minutes; which intermittent aching continued for half an hour (second day), 2.
- Aching in a middle molar tooth of the upper jaw of the right side (the molar tooth immediately below it is carious, or in popular language hollow); at 12 M. it increases and becomes of a twitching character, that is, a sensation as if the tooth was drawing out of its socket or alveoli, putting the nerve on the stretch, and suddenly pressing into the socket again, the pain shooting up to the temple of the same side; the tooth felt about an inch and a half long, and lasted till 3 P.M., relieved by pressing on the jaw with the hand, and by holding the affected side close to a hot stove; aggravated by holding cold water in the mouth (first day), 2.
- Sore pulsating pain in the body of the middle molar tooth of the right upper jaw (this tooth is perfectly sound), lasting half an hour, and then relieved by holding the right side of the face to a hot stove, at 6.30 P.M. (thirteenth day), 1.
- Gum.
- The gum of a carious tooth is swollen (ninth day), 1.
- Steady aching and soreness of the gum and root of the middle molar tooth of the right lower jaw; this aching continued until I went to sleep (9.30 P.M.); relieved by holding the right side of the face to a warm stove, or very hot wood fire; holding cold water in the mouth produced no change (ninth day), 1 . [This tooth is carious, and has been so for several years, and it is loose, but never ached before.]
- Tongue.
- Tongue coated in the morning, dirty yellow coating, which is easily removed, 3.
- Tongue like a chip, with burning and swelling of the lower lip, which remains chapped (eleventh day), 7.
- Tongue feels burnt (eleventh day), 7. [60.]
- Tongue has still the burnt sensation, and more smooth and red on the tip than usual (third day), 7.
- Severe burning in the tongue, which looks redder and dryer than usual, more the anterior portion, in the forenoon (second day), 7.
- Violent unpleasant burning in the tongue (after ten minutes), 7.
- General Mouth.
THROAT
- Objective.
- A girl inoculated when she was six years old suffered from severe attacks of inflammation of the throat, until the period of womanhood, when they ceased, 6.
- Hawking up of increased quantity of mucus, for several days (seventh day), 7.
- Fauces.
- Immediately sense of roughness and scraping in the fauces and throat, 7.
- Swallowing. [70.]
- Difficulty of swallowing in empty deglutition (second day), 7.
STOMACH
- Eructation with relief (after ten minutes), 7.
- Unpleasant eructations coming up from the stomach (sixth day), 7.
- Frequent eructations of wind, at 9 A.M. (ninth day), 7.
- Sour eructations, two hours after eating, 3.
- Felt sick at the stomach, which feeling continued over an hour (after two hours, second day), 2.
- Constant pressure and heaviness in the region of the stomach, 3.
- While lying on the left side, at night, a number of very fine sticking pains or stitches in the scrobiculus cordis, worse on inspiration, lasting a few seconds (this sensation seemed as if about a dozen fine pins or needles, half an inch in length, were dancing about in every direction), (tenth night), 1.
ABDOMEN
- Hypochondria.
- Stinging pains about the hypochondrium, lasting but a moment, at 11 A.M. (seventh day), 7.
- Umbilical.
- Pains round the umbilicus, and extending up to the epigastrium, at 8.30 P.M. (twenty-first day), 1. [80.]
- Acute sore pain extending across the abdomen, just across the umbilicus, affecting the breathing, lasting several minutes, also slight bubbling in the abdomen, and very much wind there, and emission of hot flatus, at 9.30 P.M. (twentieth day), 1.
- General Abdomen.
- Discharge of flatus, with desire for stool (after ten minutes), 7.
- Still a good deal of flatulence, with noisy eructations upwards and discharge of flatus (tenth day), 7.
- Some uneasiness in the bowels (after ten minutes), 7.
- Constant uneasiness and pain in the bowels (after nine hours and a half), 7.
- Abdomen feels swollen, 3.
- The abdomen seems unusually full and bloated, with some pain (after nine hours and a half), 7.
- At times dull pain in the abdomen; clothes too tight, 3.
- Pain and rumbling of flatus in the left abdominal region, from thence extending over the abdomen (after one hour), 7.
- Continual throbbing like a thumping in the left posterior side, in the region between the spleen and kidneys, not painful but very singular, 7. [90.]
- The throbbing in lower left side, which was from twitching of the tendons, occurred at times during the night (first night), 7.
- Colic pains in the abdomen, especially during eating (seventh day), 7.
- Colic pains in the abdomen and distension, with rumbling and discharge of flatus (eighth day), 7.
- Frequent returns of colic pains in various parts of the abdomen, sometimes mounting up to the axilla (after nine hours and a half), 7.
- Frequent returns of colic pains through the day, more noticed and more severe after eating. Quite severe colic pain in the right ilio-cæcal region, coming on like a thrust (fourth day). Colic pains still come on by turns, more in the right abdomen, and when sitting indoors (fifth day), 7.
STOOL
- Diarrhœa.
- Stool loose, but normal (ninth day), 7.
- Loose stool in the morning (sixth day); loose urgent stool, with aching at the anus (seventh day), 7.
- Constipation. [100.]
- Bowels sluggish, 3.
- No stool, which is very unusual (after three hours and a half), 7.
URINARY ORGANS
- The urine discharged yesterday and during the night is covered with a thin pellicle, and has a cloud of mucus suspended in it; fair quantity and color (second day); rather scanty and no cloud (third day), 7.
RESPIRATORY ORGANS
- Cough.
- Slight cough from irritation, at night, in bed (first night), 7.
- Respiration.
- The breath is continually oppressed, 3.
- Difficulty in breathing, worse in the morning while in bed, better while moving about and in the open air (third day), 2.
CHEST
- Feeling of fulness and tightness across the lower part of the chest and upper part of the abdomen, as if nothing could move, and causing great difficulty in breathing (the prover said she swelled in those parts), (third day), 2.
- Sharp pains in the superior region of the chest on taking a deep inspiration, at night, in bed, for two nights in succession, apparently in the pleura, lasting for some time (seventh day), 7.
- The whole chest feels sore on contact; flannel irritates without much soreness, 3.
- Front.
- Occasional digging sensations in the centre of the sternum, without pain, from within outward, 3. [110.]
- Stingings for a few moments beneath the sternum, more towards the right side (fifth day), 7.
- Sides.
- Cannot draw a long breath on account of sharp pain felt at the centre of the thorax on the left side, 3.
- Sharp, stitching pain in left chest, just below the apex of the heart, not worse on motion or inspiration (after three hours and a half), 7.
- Stinging-pricking pain between the nipple and axilla of the left side, 3.
- Fine prickling in the costal cartilages of the eighth, ninth, and tenth ribs, in the right side (twelfth day), 1.
- Soreness in a small spot just below the ribs, on the right side; also and first on the left side, but worse on the right side, at 7.30 P.M. (twentieth day), 1.
- Mammæ.
- Very acute pain in the left mammary gland, about an inch above the nipple, while sitting in the house, and lasting about five minutes; this pain, I think, I cannot describe intelligibly; sometimes it seemed to be a throbbing sore pain, at others as if a sharp edge of a small knife-blade was pressing on the spot, and with great force, increasing in intensity, and with a sore bruised feeling of the ribs beneath when pressed with the hand; relieved by walking about, particularly by deep inspiration; aggravated by expiration; at 3.30 P.M. A return of this pain at 5 o'clock, immediately after eating supper. After leaving the mammary gland it passes down the side as low as the spleen. At 6.30 a return of the pain in the mammary gland. Immediately after leaving the mammary gland, a sensation of a lancing pain passing down the right side of the chest and inner side of the right upper arm, then to the elbow, down the lower arm and along the dorsal surface of the second and third fingers, after which, pain in the left carpus; it returned at 7.25 and 9.20 (twentieth day), .
HEART AND PULSE
- Palpitation, hard beating of the heart on slight exercise, all the morning (second day), 7.
- Pulse somewhat accelerated for several days, at 9 A.M. (eleventh day), 7.
NECK AND BACK
- Continual burning pain in the left scapula, just above and posterior to the spine of the scapula, 3. [120.]
- The back and right half of the abdomen and outer part of the right thigh presented a streaked appearance of alternate red and white (the former the broadest); this redness vanished by pressing with the fingers, but returned immediately on taking away the pressure; the streaks extended as high up as the scapulæ; the redness seemed to be of a dull hue; at 9 o'clock, on retiring to bed (seventeenth day), 1.
- Chronic ailments of the spine much aggravated, especially between the scapulæ, 3.
SUPERIOR EXTREMITIES
- Shoulder.
- Easy trembling in left arm and shoulder, on reclining and supporting the body with that hand (after three hours and a half), 7.
- More pain in right arm, but more tremulous sensation (and loss of power?) in the left (after three-quarters of an hour), 7.
- Drawing or cramplike pain in the right axilla, lasting half an hour (third day), 3.
- Heavy aching-drawing pain in the left axilla, extending through the shoulder, with a sensation as if the shoulder would be drawn towards the neck, lasting half an hour (fourth day), 2.
- Axillary glands feel swollen and sore, especially the left, 3.
- Forearm.
- The arm feels numb when holding anything with the hand (seventh day), 2.
- The right forearm continues slightly numb, especially along the ulnar nerve to the end of the last two fingers, and prickles on resting on the elbow (after three hours and a half), 7.
- Numb tensive pain of the forearm, and rheumatic stiffness of the shoulders and elbow-joints, lasting three hours, at 6 P.M. (second day), 4. [130.]
- Dull aching pain extending from a little above the elbow down the posterior portion of the arm, dorsum of the hand, to the ends of the fingers, lasting two hours and a half; relieved by exercising the arm (seventh day), 2.
- Hand.
- Trembling in left hand and forearm, when even holding the paper to write (after three hours and a half), 7.
- Painful weakness of the right hand; especially the two last fingers are inclined to numbness on writing (third day), 7.
- Drawing crampy pain in the middle of the palm of the right hand, extending to the pits of the fingers (not the thumb), as if the fingers would be drawn towards the palm of the hand, lasting three hours and a half (fifth day), 2.
- Fingers.
- Pain in the palmar surface of the last phalanx of the third finger, at 3 P.M.; a recurrence of the pain at 7 (twenty-first day), 1.
- Burning and aching in the ends of the fingers, more of the right hand (after nine hours and a half), 7.
- Severe aching pain in the little finger of the right hand, while sitting quietly reading; continuing some time (sixth day), .
INFERIOR EXTREMITIES
- Thigh. [140.]
- Twitching of the tendons of the right buttock, at 8.30 P.M. (seventh day), 7.
- At 10 P.M., numb tensive pain on the inner part of the thigh, extending from the scrotum to the condyle (second day), 4.
- (Aching-tensive pain in the anterior and lower part of both thighs, at 8 P.M., the right worse than the left; lasting over an hour in the left, and until I went to sleep in the right; by pressing on the parts with the hand the periosteum feels bruised and sore) (twentieth day), 1.
- Knee.
- Very short stitches in the popliteal space in the left leg; it seems as if there were a dozen or more small pins or needles shooting in every direction in the part, which was so intolerable that she was compelled to rub and scratch the part, but without any relief; lasting over half an hour (fifth day), 2.
- Leg.
- Severe intolerable aching pain in right leg, above the ankle in the lower third, almost making one cry out, while sitting, somewhat relieved by walking, returning with increased violence on sitting down, at 9 P.M. (eighth day), quite severe during the early part of the night (eighth night), 7.
- Violent smarting in the popliteal space in the left leg, as if it had been burned at a hot stove, lasting fifteen minutes (fifth day), 2.
- Foot.
- Pain in the right instep, soon passing off (after nine hours and a half), 7.
GENERAL SYMPTOMS
- Objective.
- Swelling of the whole body (from merely passing by in the shadow of the tree), 6.
- Under a good deal of nervous excitement, with fever, hard pulse (tenth day), 7.
- Restless at night, continual rolling from side to side, 3.
- Cannot sit still; constant change of position because it gives relief, 3.
- Subjective. [150.]
- General malaise, fever, and headache, 6.
- Worst symptoms on the left side, 3.
SKIN
- Objective.
- The swelling was quite gone in the course of a few days, and it was followed by the breaking out of a red color all over the body, resembling scarlet fever, 5.
- Eruptions, Dry.
- A boy was subject to occasional burning eruptions on the skin for some years after the inoculation, 6.
- The lower portion of the right hypochondriac region down to the crest of the right ilium, and extending two-thirds across the abdomen (from right to left) presented a pale-red appearance, as if an eruption would make its appearance; by passing the hand over this portion of the abdomen beneath the skin is covered with papillæ; next morning, could see no trace of these papillæ on the right side, but the left side of the abdomen presented a similar appearance as the right side, but the left side of the abdomen presented a similar appearance as the right side of the night previous, but much less marked (eighteenth day), 1.
- At night, on retiring (9 o'clock), observed several pimples on the back part of the neck, shoulders, both scapulæ, and lower down on the back; some of them presented a white appearance at their apex; these pimples did not lose their redness on pressure with the fingers (eighteenth day), 1.
- Small round dull-red pimples on the right scapula, anterior, and upper half of the left forearm, in the same region of the right arm, but more numerous on the left; also on the outer and upper parts of the calf of the left leg. When observed, those on the calf of the left leg and left arm looked dry and scaly, as if the parts had been scratched with the finger-nail (fifteenth day), 1.
- A red, hard pimple appeared on the left side of the sacrum, painful when touched (second day), 4.
- Ulcers.
- *Inflammation of the part, with deep, hard-edged ulcers, which discharge a thick, purulent, greenish-yellow matter, having a very peculiar fetid smell, the parts becoming in appearance similar to a piece of raw decayed meat, while the surrounding skin is covered with small shining scales, 6.
- Subjective.
- A tormenting itching and burning came over my whole body, 5. [160.]
- Itching of the nose, burning in the open air, worse in a warm room (seventh day), 2.
- Itching all over that portion of the nose inferior to the bridge, internally and externally, continuing constantly until she went to sleep at night, momentarily relieved by rubbing (sixth and seventh days), .
SLEEP AND DREAMS
- Sleepiness.
- Night, was restless until 2 A.M.; no sleep, with heat of the hands and head, full, heavy and somewhat accelerated pulse, and cold feet and legs (first night), 7.
- Dreams.
- Troubled dreams, during sleep, 3.
- Talking about one's business in sleep, 3.
FEVER
- Sensation of increased warmth, almost burning, accompanied with painful weakness, extending from the shoulders down to the hands, there remaining, rendering even writing painful, more in palm and wrist (after ten minutes); pain in right hand grows severe, and extends to the elbows (after one hour); much lessened or disappears on getting up and moving around, 7.
- High fever (from merely passing by, in the shadow of the tree), 6.
- Some arterial excitement during the night (ninth day), 7.
- Often, especially after exercise, a feeling as if boiling or heated fluid were in the veins, or as if they were inflamed, mostly along the inside of the upper and forearms (thirteenth day), 7.
- The hands and head are unusually hot, at night, with sleeplessness until 3 A.M. (thirteenth day), 7.
CONDITIONS
- Aggravation.
- ( Morning ), Heaviness of head; at 6 o'clock, soreness of eyeballs; bitter taste; in bed, difficulty of breathing.
- ( About noon ), Itching on scrotum, etc.
- ( Afternoon ), At 3 or 4 o'clock, eye painful; at 4.30 o'clock, sensation in molar teeth; at 6 o'clock, pain in forearm.
- ( Evening ), Soreness in eyeballs; catarrhal symptoms; pains in eye; about 8.30 o'clock, stitches in canthus; at 8.30 o'clock, pains around umbilicus, etc.; at 9.30 o'clock, pain across abdomen; at 9 o'clock, after lying down in bed, pains in hypogastric region; at 7.30 o'clock, soreness below ribs; at 8 o'clock, itching on the abdomen; itching on lower extremities.

MIND
- A cheerful condition of mind during the forenoon (first day), 8a.
HEAD. [190.]
- While inhaling at 10.25 P.M., aching in the os frontis and orbital bones (fourteenth day), 8c.
- Dull aching in the forehead, and on moving the head a sense of fulness, rigidity, and lameness of the muscles of the neck, in the afternoon (sixteenth day), 8c.
- Pain above the left eyebrow, at 4.12 P.M. (second day), 8c.
- 11.30 P.M., while lying on the right side, an aching in the right temple, followed by an aching and sense of fulness in the right side of the face (second day), 8b.
- Aching in the right temple and right orbital bones, at 6 P.M. (second day), 8c.
- 2.35 P.M., a sharp pain passing down the right temporal ridge and external angular process. Immediately after a sharp pain at the right supraorbital ridge, close to the supraorbital notch (fourth day), 8c.

- Heat and fulness in the interior of the right ear, at 1 P.M. (third day), 3b.
FACE
- 5.10 P.M., after slight exercise in the open air, and while in my room, an aching in the left maxillary articulation, leaving a sense of fulness; immediately after an aching in right maxillary articulation, terminating in a sharp pain (nineteenth day), 8c. [200.]
- 5.22 P.M., after a short walk in the open air, and having entered a warm room, an aching in the right maxillary articulation, involving the whole of the right side of head (nineteenth day), 8c.

- 5.30 P.M., aching in the upper molar teeth and gum of the right side, aggravated by cold air (second day), 8b.
- 1 P.M., immediately after dinner, an aching in the body of the last molar tooth of the right side of the lower jaw (third day), 8b.
- At 3 P.M., while sitting in my office reading, an aching in the lower incisors, passing to the right cuspid and bicuspid teeth, continuing five minutes (first day), 8. [210.]
- 4.30 P.M., aching in the lower incisors, which leaves them very sensitive to pressure from the upper teeth (third day), 8a.
- 5.30 P.M., while at rest in a warm room, a sore aching of the gum of the right upper molar teeth (nineteenth day), 8c.

THROAT
- 3.30 P.M., while at rest, a sense of expansion in the œsophagus, as of air ascending slowly from the stomach (third day), 3a.

- Appetite for dinner less than usual (first day), 8.

- An acrid, rancid sensation while walking in the open air, at 3.30 P.M., 8.
- 11 A.M., an eructation of tasteless air (first day), 8a.
- 10.15 A.M., while at rest, an eructation of air tasting of the drug (first day), 8a.

- An eructation of sour, acrid water, at 2.5 P.M. (tenth day), 8c.
- 10.10 A.M., after a walk in the open air and soon after entering my office, an intense acrid eructation, producing momentary strangulation (twelfth day), 8c.
- Hiccoughed several times, at 3 P.M., immediately after gaped several times (tenth day), 8c.
- About 11 P.M., while lying on the left side, an expansive, intense distress in the epigastric region, like unto heartburn, extending through the posterior border of the left scapula, continuing half an hour. Amelioration by lying on the right side (tenth day), 8c.
- 10 P.M., pain in the epigastrium, as of flatus (sixteenth day), 8c.
ABDOMEN
- Soon a tense feeling in the abdomen, as if the bowels were full of flatus (second day), 8a.
- Soon after breakfast, and while walking in the open air, expulsion of odorless flatus per anus (second day), 8a.
- 3.40 P.M., pain in the right side of the abdomen, running downwards, following the course of the rectus muscle (second day), 8c.
- 7.15 P.M., an aching in the left side of the floating ribs (fifteenth day), 8c.
- Wandering pain in the right side of the abdomen, at 10 P.M. (sixteenth day), 8c. [230.]
- 6.25 A.M., after a walk in the open air, and while sitting in my room, a bubbling in the hypogastric region (second day), 8a.
- Pains in the hypogastrium from flatus, A.M. (second day), 8a.
- 4.30 P.M., severe flatulent pains in abdomen; 6 P.M., severe flatulent pain in the abdomen, preceding and during a diarrhœic stool, followed by feeling of weakness and perspiration on the face and neck (fifteenth day), 8c.
RESPIRATORY ORGANS
- 7.15 P.M., after a walk in the open air and on seating myself in a warm room, an itching in the right side of the trachea, producing a dry, hacking cough. Soon after an itching in the left side of the trachea, causing a dry hacking cough (fifteenth day), 8c.
CHEST
- A soreness in the left lung, such as is felt during the convalescence from pneumonia, at 5.30 P.M., while at rest in my office (first day), 8.
- 11 P.M., while lying on the left side, an aching at the lower third of the sternum, continuing several minutes (tenth day), 8c.
- 10.50 A.M., while walking in the open air, a sticking pain from without inwards in the region of the cartilages of the sixth and seventh ribs (twelfth day), 8c.
- While in bed sore aching in the anterior wall of the chest (fourteenth day), 8c.
- 3.15 P.M., an intense aching at the posterior aspect of the middle of the sternum (fifteenth day), 8c.
- During the day aching in the anterior wall of the chest (fifteenth day), 8c. [240.]
- Drawing in the right anterior wall of the chest, soon after 3.50 P.M. (third day), 8a.
- 3.25 P.M., a drawing, crampy sensation in the right anterior of the chest and axilla, extending down the arm to the fingers, and terminating in a jerking of the little finger (thirteenth day), 8c.
- 3.40 P.M., pain in the right anterior well of the chest, near the axilla (second day), 8c.
- 1.30 P.M., while writing, drawing sensation in the right anterior wall of the chest and right arm, passing down the arm to the elbow (third day), 8c.
- 5 P.M., aching in the right anterior wall of the chest, extending through to the right scapula (tenth day), 8c.
- At 2.30 P.M., while inhaling, a drawing crampy sensation at the outer border of the right mammary gland, extending to the axilla and arm (fourteenth day), 8c.
- Pulsating raw pain near the sternal border of the left mammary gland, seeming to be in the cartilage of the fifth rib, at 5 P.M. (second day), 8c.
BACK
- 3.50 P.M., pain under the lower part of the left scapula (third day), 8a.
- 2.35 P.M., broad pain passing from the lower angle of the right scapula to the locality of the serrations of the serratus magnus muscles, then a pulsating pain at the posterior aspect of the coccyx (fourth day), 8c.
- 9.50 P.M., a sore aching at the right scapula (fifteenth day), 8c. [250.]
- 9.45 P.M., a crampy aching below the right scapula (fifth day), 8.
- 3.5 P.M., a pulsating pain in the right sacro-iliac articulation, leaving a lameness, which is felt when walking (third day), 8c.
- 10 P.M., aching in the dorsal region (sixteenth day), 8c.
- A pulsating pain in the left sacro-iliac articulation, at 2.18 P.M. (third day), 8c.
- Aching in the coccyx, while in bed (fourteenth day), 8c.
EXTREMITIES
- Soon after 10.55 P.M., while lying on the left side, a drawing sensation and aching in the upper part of the right forearm, then a pulsating, deep pain in the right gluteal region, just above the tuber ischii, seeming to be in the periosteum, then a sharp pain just above the crest of the right ilium. After which the pain in the right gluteal region returned, then a sharp pain just above the crest of the ilium, then a drawing and aching in the right foot, then a drawing and aching in the anterior muscles of the right forearm, then a pulsating, deep pain in the right gluteal region, sensitive to pressure, then a drawing and aching in the anterior muscles of the left forearm. A drawing in the outer side of the left foot, extending to the plantar aspect, as if the foot would cramp, then a drawing and aching in the left leg, not relieved by motion. A same awning and sense of drawing in the right forearm, near the elbow, then a return of the pain near the right thigh, at the inner border of the sartorius the muscles (first day), 8c.
- Soon after, 11.30 P.M., an aching in the right ankle, then aching in the right forearm, then a deep, pulsating pain in the right gluteal region, near the tuber ischii (second day), 8b.
- 6 P.M. drawing in the muscles of the right upper arm, then drawing in the dorsum of the right foot, then drawing in the plantar region of the right foot, shifting from place to place as rapidly as I can write the symptoms (second day), 8c.
SUPERIOR EXTREMITIES
- While in bed, aching in the muscles of the right arm (fourteenth day), 8c.
- 3.8 P.M., while at rest, a sharp pain passing through the right shoulder to the scapula (third day), 8a. [260.]
- 4.15 P.M., while at rest, a drawing sensation and aching, commencing suddenly in the right axilla, moving down the inner side of the arm to the elbow (third day), 8a.
- 2.30 P.M., while at rest, a lame, aching pain in right upper arm (third day), 8a.
- 3.45 P.M., drawing, crampy sensation in the muscles of the right upper arm. After a short interval a similar sensation in the right elbow (thirteenth day), 8c.
- 7.15 P.M., a drawing sensation in the right upper arm, followed by an aching in the left side at the floating ribs (fifteenth day), 8c.
- 7 P.M., while riding on horseback, a drawing sensation in the muscles of the right upper arm (nineteenth day), 8c.
- 4.30 P.M., a severe aching pain at the internal condyle of the right arm, after a walk in the open air and while standing in the open air, continuing five minutes; at the same time, and while the arm is resting on a support, a sense of drawing at the inner side of the left upper arm (nineteenth day), 8c.
- 2.45 P.M., a sharp sticking pain in the right elbow (fifth day), 8c.
- 3.40 P.M., while inhaling, aching in the right forearm, commencing in the belly of the flexor carpi radialis muscles, extending through the arm. The arm is sensitive to pressure (tenth day), 8c.
- 9.30 P.M. aching in the left forearm (twelfth day), 8c.
- 3.45 P.M., sense of drawing in the right forearm, extending to the metacarpus (tenth day), 8c. [270.]
- 4.30 P.M., a pulsating pain in the interosseous tissue, at the palmar aspect of the left forearm, near the wrist, extending to the little finger, where it becomes a drawing, crampy pain, then a drawing sensation, extending up the forearm from the wrist (third day), 8b.
- 9.45 P.M., a crampy aching in the right wrist (fifteenth day), 8c.
- A transient drawing pain passing through the right carpus, leaving the wrist lame on motion, at 10 A.M. (fourth day), 8c.
- 9.25 P.M., after a walk in the open air and while in my room reading, a sharp pain suddenly pierces the palmar aspect of the left carpus, traversing the dorsum of the first and second fingers, becoming a drawing pain in its progress to the metacarpo-phalangeal articulation of those fingers, then involving all the metacarpo-phalangeal articulations of the hand, drawing the fingers closer together and the thumb towards the palm of the hand. The whole hand is numb, looks and feels swollen, its temperature is increased. Continued motion relieves the drawing, but not the numbness, which continued fifteen minutes (fourth day), .
INFERIOR EXTREMITIES. [280.]
- 3.20 P.M., an intermittent, pressing-outward pain at the left sacro-iliac articulation, sensitive to pressure, relieved by walking, but feels lame and sore (third day), 8a.
- 5 P.M., a pulsating pain in the right gluteal region, near the tuberosity of the ischium, sensitive to pressure (third day), 8b.
- 3.40 P.M., a pulsating pain at the left pubic bone, continuing several hours, generally relieved by walking, sometimes felt when walking; the pain seems to be in the periosteum; there is sensitiveness on pressure (second day), 8c.
- 10 A.M., while standing quietly before a hot stove, a return of the pain near the right tuber ischii (second day), 8c.
- 4.50 P.M., a pulsating, deep pain in the posterior and upper part of the right thigh (third day), 8b.
- 2.35 P.M., while writing, pain in the upper and posterior part of the left thigh (fifth day), 8c.
- 4.10 P.M., pulsating pain in the neck on the right femur, seeming to be in the capsular ligament, ceasing while walking, returning when at rest (tenth day), 8c.
- At night, while in bed, a pulsating pain in the neck of the right femur; this pain was felt several times during the day (eleventh day), 8c.
- 1 P.M., a pulsating, deep pain in the neck of the right femur; this pain seems to be in the capsular ligament, at the inner border of the ilio-femoral ligament, and continues ten hours, relieved by walking (twelfth day), 8c.
- 5.5 P.M., a return of the pain in the neck of the right femur, continuing several hours (fourteenth day), 8c. [290.]
- 3.27 P.M., while at rest, pain along the outer side of the right thigh (third day), 8a.
- 9.50 P.M., a lame aching at the inner side of the right thigh, just above the knee, followed by a wiry or threadlike pain in the right instep (fifteenth day), 8c.
- Aching and sense of drawing in the outer hamstring of the right leg, at 3.40 P.M.; return of the aching and drawing, at 4.26 P.M. (second day), 8c.
- 3 P.M., a lame, aching pain in the right knee (third day), 8a.
- 9.20 P.M., while seated in a warm room, and immediately after supper, an intense crampy aching in the left knee, continuing eight minutes; not relieved by motion (nineteenth day), 8c.
- 3.50 P.M., a drawing pain in the right knee, extending into the anterior muscles of the thigh (third day), 8a.
- 12.30 A.M., while in bed, an intermittent pressing outward pain in the right knee, relieved by motion (second day), .
GENERALITIES
- Several times during the afternoon a sense of weakness, with heat and perspiration on the face and neck (sixteenth day), 8c.
- During the forenoon, aching in both sides and upper arms, the right side worse (sixteenth day), 8c.
SKIN
- 10 A.M., while at rest in my office, itching on the inner side of the left thigh, then above the right eye, then on the scalp; 10.15 A.M., itching at the inner border of the gastrocnemius muscles of the left leg, relieved by rubbing. Immediately after a tingling itching on the right side of the upper lip, then a crawling itching on the right malar region, then an itching moving downwards from the right commissure of the mouth, then an itching on the palmar aspect of the right carpus, moving towards the palm of the hand, then an itching at the angle of the jaw on the right side; 10.55 A.M., itching at the right eyebrow; 11.40 A.M., a biting-corrosive itching on the right forearm, over the belly of the palmaris longus muscle. Immediately after itching on the right side of the face, near the angle of jaw, then itching on the posterior aspect of the right forearm, then an itching on the dorsal aspect of the first phalanx of the index finger of the right hand (first day). During the afternoon itching on different parts of the exterior body (third day), 8a.
- Itching on the extremities and face (first day), 8.
- Stinging itching on the right scapula, at 2.45 P.M. (tenth day), 8c.
SLEEP
- Last night the sleep was dreamy and refreshing. It seemed more like a clairvoyant state. After midnight I dreamed of birds singing, which a woke me, and caused me to listen with intense interest, but stillness and darkness reigned supreme (third day), 8b.
- The sleep last night was light and dreamy. After midnight I dreamed I entered a beautiful garden, from which I passed into a low woodland, in the eastern border of which was a sluggish, broad, shallow stream of water; to cross dry shod required some exercise of mind. This morning arose from bed refreshed, light-hearted, and cheery (second day), 8c.
