MUREX.

Murex purpurea^ L. The (desiccated) juice contained in an or^ near the headt which constituted the Tyrian purple dye of the ancients.

I. Provings. — [. A woman of 46, of nervous constitution and very

impressionable, but in good health, save for some leucorrhcea and weight at stomach, proved a sol. of a decigr. of the 4th trit. in 6 spbonftils of water, of which she took a spoonful each e. Jan. 6th. — Sleep quiet In 12 h. after dose, sharp pain in r. side of uterus, which extends to L breast ; extreme weakness of voluntary movements ; giving way of legs and irresistible desire to remain sitting ; confusion of ideas, xepugnance to conversation, profound sadness. 6 p.m., palpitation of heart and throbbing of arteries in neck ; later, excessive ^fatigue, somnolence, heat in hands, pulse 80 ; pain in knees, sense of excoriation and burning in breasts ; bruised feeling in chest. N. good. 7th. — Burning, pungent pain under 1. false ribs, towards spine, increasing constantly ; drowsiness and sadness j difficult evacuation, requiring lavement. Pain in side continued all d. £., painful tension in r. hypochondrium i dry cough, not frequent ; dyspnoea ; voice hoarse. 8tn. — After a good n., woke feeling very well. Pain in side had gone. Sense of dryness and constriction in uterus, but weight much less since yesterday, and no leucorrhGca since first spoonful. No further symptoms till nth, when

1. A woman of 38, of sanguine temp., sound mind, and good health, save for some Icucorrhcea, took same as No. 1 . I st d. — Towards midday pain \x\ occiput and in forearms. 2nd d. — Headache on awaking, which goes oiF on getting up. Dunng d., pains in 1. temple, coming and going ; dulness of head from time to time without mental clouding. Towards e., tightness in occiput, when it passes from 1, to r, she involuntarilv raises opposite hand to head, bending head back seems to relax nerves and relieve. Constant desire to urinate during d. ; at 3 p.m., strong desire to sleep. 3rd d. — Headache as on previous e. ; has bad troublesome dreams during n., she fled from a stormy sea, and found herself in a meadow with water ; during d. momentary dulness of head ; at 5 p.m. r. cheelc was burning; in e., twice, a very violent sticch on 1. side of abdomen, low down, it went straight up, lasting only am.; at 9 p.m., strong drowsiness. During d., pains in legs from time to time ; tightness of head on each side above the cars ; pains in breasts. 4th d, — Distressing dreams. On waking, headache, going off as on previous days about 10 a.m. Pretty severe colic; hunger during d., but little appetite at dinner time ; pains in breasts. 5th d. — Almost uncontrollable sexual excitement. 6th d. — L. cheek burning ; hunger during d. \ in c. painful headache for about an h. 7th d.— Dreams as berore } woke with a start, frightened. In m., Icucorrhcea, which had ceased from tst d., returned^ scanty, but greenish. In e., flatulent griping and frontal headache. She had been constipated since 2nd d., and to-day had no stool. During Hr^t days of proving, she coughed several times before breakfast, and had wheezing on inspiration in e. During later days, occasional attacks of anxiety, with restlessness and dread. {Ibid.)

2. A woman, zt. 39, sanguine-lymphatic temp., has leucorrhoea, with some pains in loins and thighs. Took drug in same manner. 1st d. — At 2 and 4 p.m., sharp but transient pains above cerebellum. Less Icucorrhcea, but always mixed with blood. 2nd d, — Since noon, head embarrassed and a little heavy ; not much aptitude for work. At 2.30, humming in ears and increased dulness of head \ latter went off about 4. At 6.30, sharp pain in 1. abdomen, involving whole, but as it were at painful points only ; 1. side remained painful all e. Lcucorrhoea less copious and unmixed with blood. 3rd d. — Less dulness of head j Icucorrhcea as yesterday ; abdomen also, but felt less. 4th d. — Towards 3 p.m., severe pain above r. temple j in e., return of blood from uterus ; to-day and yesterday, pain in breasts. 5th d. — No blood. 6th d. — No blood, and but little Icucorrhcea. Breasts had been very painful, and she had violent shootings iji them while in bed. 7th d.— Woke during n. with a start, and violent desire to urinate, which she did very copiously. Heaviness of head, and even dizziness. Since taking med. failure of memory \ she cannot remember words. Her pains had rather been increased than otherwise since taking med., and on 8th d. they were very bad \ blood also had returned with the Icucorrhcea. She felt as before period, which was not due for another fortnight. Next d. she was much better. {Ibid,)

I. 4. Mrs. C— was furnished with 12 powders of 3rd trit. fo proving, to take one n. and m. She reported the following eflects Heavy dull pain in forehead, beginning about 4 p.m, and lasting I she went to sleep, relieved by tying head up tightly ; shooting in evi red spots on face; swelling of face in m. for several d. ; itchingoffi and forehead, only temporarily relieved by scratching, while salt wat though causing smarting, relieved the itching. Nasty flat taste mouth. On waking in m., tongue yellowish ; appetite impair© heavy pain in pit of stomach, going to heart, where it is sharp, i while lying on back and relieved by sitting up (after a month) ; wita urgent, forcible, flatulent diarrhoea 3 times a d., before stool cutti and griping in hypogastrium, extending downward and to back, if stool slight tenesmus. Urine scanty ; after micturating, pressure w desire to pass more ; menses 2 — 3 d. too early first mo. (after 4 d. drug), lasted usual time, dark, clotted, and copious ; at second mott they were r6 d. early, and lasted only 2 d., copious, pale, and th followed by bland transparent leucorrhoea ; during menses, for thi occasions, pain crossed womb from r. to 1., then rose to stomach, 1 went to 1. chest ; heavy sore pain in uterine region at intervals 3 — 4 d., soreness there on bending forward and going up stairs, bett| while still ; pressing down in womb, worse standing. Heavy tr pain about heart, worse lying on back and (still more) on I. s» better from moving about ; sharp pain about heart. Stiffness of ne and 1. shoulder in m. ; weak, tired all over, stiff in limbs; shooting limbs, now in one place, now in another, — I. wrist to elbow, — in ftnp joints of both hands ; lameness ; constant heavy dull pain in hi| most in r. ; rheumatic cutting and shooting pains in knees, as if bones, extending to ankles.
