HEAD
Confusion and Vertigo.
Confusion of the whole head (a few minutes after the dose, sixteenth day), 10.

Confusion and discomfort of the head, on waking in the morning (seventh day), 9a.
Confusion of the head, which, after half an hour, became a pressive pain upon the vertex; after an hour this pain extended down into the left eye, and at the same time affected the whole head, 16a. [50.]
Confusion of the head; pains in the right side, especially in the occiput; these symptoms were aggravated not only by thinking but also by speaking (fourth day), 10a.
Confusion of the head, like intoxication, lasting the whole day, and at times becoming a decided pressive pain in the forehead, especially in the right half, so that thought was very difficult (third day), 11.
Confusion of the head, on waking in the morning (like that of the day previous), lasting till after dinner (fourth day); on the next day it continued, and soon changed to a pressive pain seated in the forehead and affecting the eyes, so that movement of the lids and eyeballs was painful; ascending steps or any violent exertion of the body aggravated the pain, 11.

EYE
Objective.
Sits looking as though in deep thought; stares in front of him, but is completely without thought (after two hours), 1 . [This is an unusual condition; alternate action with the subsequent symptoms, 3, 4, 9, 13, 35, 28. -Hahnemann.]
Subjective.
Pain extending from the head into the left eye, when the eyes began to burn and water , the lids became swollen, and the meibomian glands secreted much mucus, 16a.*
Pressure in the right eye from within outward; it seems as though the eyeball was protruding from the orbit (fifth day), 10a.
Pressure in and above the eyes on waking in the morning (second day), 13.
Painful pressure above the eyes, with pressure in the eyeballs, especially on looking at the light, 13.
Pain below the orbits and in the cheek where it has extended from the head (third day), 17.
Lids.
Agglutination of the lids in the morning, with purulent mucus; on opening the eyes the light is blinding, 1.
The lids are agglutinated in the morning; there is pressure within the eye as from sand; on opening the lids; sticking in the eyes (after thirty-six hours), 1.
One corner of the lips becomes ulcerated (after two hours), 1.
The inner surface of the lower lip is ulcerated (without pain), 1.
An enlarged gland on the inner surface of the lower lip; with sore pain, 1.
An enlarged cutaneous gland on the inner surface of the lower lip suppurates with sore pain (after four hours), 1.
Sticking in the lips , especially on moving them (after a quarter of an hour), 1.
Sticking in the lower lip, even when it is not moved (after eight hours), 1.
An exceedingly piercing fine sticking in the lower lip when touching a hair of the beard in that place, as if a splinter were sticking in it (after eight hours), 1 . [Compare 637. -Hahnemann.] [210.]
The inner surface of the lower lip is painful as if raw and sore (after eight and ten hours), 1.
Chin.
The lower jaw is involuntarily drawn upward and the jaws close, which prevents speech for half an hour (after half an hour), 2.
Moves his mouth in sleep as if eating (after three hours), 1.
Pain in the articulation of the lower jaw, in the morning while lying down, 1.
Pressure beneath both rami of the lower jaw, as if the flesh beneath the jaw were pressed downward, during rest and motion, 3.
Fine sticking in the extreme tip of the tongue (after two hours), 1.
Needlelike stitches in the frænum of the tongue, 2. [230.]
There is a sharp feeling in the tip of the tongue as if it were sore, 1.
The tip of the tongue is extremely painful (smarting, tearing), as if burnt or sore (in the morning in bed after waking), 1.
Tobacco-smoke bites the forepart of the tongue and causes (dull?) pain in the incisors, 1.
General Mouth.
The inner surface of the mouth is covered with offensive-smelling mucus in the morning on waking, 1.
He easily bites the inside of the cheek, near the orifice of the salivary duct while chewing, .*
THROAT
Constrictive sensation in the pit of the throat, which causes a cough, as from sulphur fumes, 1 . [See note to S. 130. -Hahnemann.]
Retching (constrictive) sensation in the middle of the throat as if there were a large morsel of food or a plug sticking there; felt more when not swallowing than when swallowing (in the evening), (after four hours), 1 . [See note to S. 130. -Hahnemann.]*
Sticking low down in the throat when swallowing; it disappears on continuing to swallow and returns when not swallowing, 1.
Sticking in the throat when not swallowing; when swallowing it seems as though one swallowed over a bone, causing a cracking (after three hours), 1 . [If there is an alternate action of Ignatia in which there is a sore throat, with sticking on swallowing (I have never met with it in my experience), it must be extremely rare, and hence of little value as an indication. I have never been able to cure with Ignatia a sore throat in which sticking occurred only during the act of swallowing, even though the other symptoms seemed to be similar to those of Ignatia; when, however, the stitches in the throat are only felt when not swallowing, a cure follows with Ignatia, the more certain, speedy, and lasting, the more the other symptoms of the patient can be covered by those of Ignatia. -Hahnemann.]*

Sore throat, like a lump in the throat, which is painfully sore when swallowing (after sixteen hours), 1 . [The Ignatia-angina, with internal swelling of the throat like a lump when not swallowing, causes for the most part a sore pain in this lump only when swallowing, so the sore throat that will be cured by Ignatia must be characterized (with correspondence of the other symptoms), by these same conditions, when it will be speedily and certainly cured. -Hahnemann.]
Good appetite; food and drink are relished (after four hours), 1 . [Secondary or curative effect, following the preceding opposite effect, loss of appetite. -Hahnemann.]
Appetite very good, but when he attempted to eat he felt satiated (seventh day), 17.
Great appetite, 1 . [This kind of ravenous hunger seems to be in alternation with 279, 304, 305, 306, 312, 313, but more seldom. -Hahnemann.]
Loss of appetite, 13 ; (after one to seven hours), 1 ; (sixth day), 12.
Loss of appetite for food, smoke, and drink, immediately, 1.
Complete loss of desire for tobacco, food, and drink, with frequent accumulation of saliva in the mouth, though without aversion to these substances, and without bad taste (after eight hours), 1.
If he smokes in the afternoon it seems as though he had become so satisfied thereby that he could eat nothing in the evening, 1.
Aversion to warm food and meat, desires only bread, butter, and cheese (after ninety-six hours), 1. [310.]

ABDOMEN
Hypochondria.
Great distension of the hypochondria, especially in the sides, pit of the stomach and small of the back; on account of the tension and fulness under the ribs she was unable to breathe ; with constant anxiety; she was obliged to loosen the clothes, 18.
A constrictive sensation in the hypochondria, as in constipation, with onesided headache, as though a nail were pressed into the brain, in the morning (after twenty hours), 1 . [Our ancestors called this kind of headache clavus. This kind of pain is characteristic of Ignatia; a pressure as from a sharp-pointed instrument, which is also seen in other symptoms, as in 449, 567, 586, where also, "pressure as with a hard substance" seems to belong as in 84, 608. -Hahnemann.]
Pain in the spleen , extending from the stomach and thence to the vertebral column; after an hour this sensation changed into stitches, which extended up into the thorax, but did not seem to affect the thoracic viscera; an hour later there were again sticking and burning in the region of the spleen, and this was repeated several times during the day, 1a.
Painful pressure in the region of the spleen and pit of the stomach , which, after half an hour, intermitted and continued to recur in intermitting paroxysms till toward noon (third day), 9a.*
Umbilical and Flanks.
A sensation in the abdomen, in the region of the umbilicus, as if from something alive (after eight hours), 1. [370.]
A painful pressure near the left side of the umbilicus, 3.
A painful pressure in a small spot, near the right side of the umbilicus, which is aggravated by deep breathing and voluntary distension of the abdomen, obliging him to retract the navel, which relieves; with rumbling in the abdomen, 19.
Griping colic exactly in the umbilical region, whereupon the pain, consisting of pinching and fine sticking, extended into the left side of the chest, 1.
Cutting pain in the umbilical region (after 18 drops), 11 ; (sixth day), 10a.
Sharp sticking, above and to the left of the umbilicus, 3.
Fine sticking colic beneath the umbilicus (after one and two hours), .
RECTUM AND ANUS
Objective.
Blind piles, with pain composed of pressure and soreness (in the anus and rectum); painful while sitting and standing, less while walking, though renewed and worse after taking the fresh air, 1 . [Alternation with 445. -Hahnemann.]*
Itching pimple in the anus, which is not painful during stool, but causes a pressure while sitting, 1.
Swelling of the margin of the anus all about, as from a distended vein, 1.
*Prolapsus of the rectum, from moderate exertion at stool, 1.
(Discharge of blood from the anus, with itching of the perineum and anus), 1.
Threadworms crawl out of the anus (after sixteen hours), 1.

Spasmodic tension in the rectum the whole day, 1.*
Pain as from blind piles, a pressive and sore sensation, after exerting the mind in thought, soon after a stool (after thirty-six hours), 1.

STOOL
Diarrhœa. [470.]
Diarrhœa-like stool at 6 P.M. (second day); four times repeated (third day); the same symptom appeared in a subsequent proving, 9.
Frequent evacuations from the bowels, small and rather thin, 16a.
Three evacuations from the bowels, during the afternoon and evening, with scanty discharge at times of rather soft fæces, 16a.

URINARY ORGANS
Bladder.
Sharp pressure upon the bladder, as from incarcerated flatus, after supper, 1.
Scraping, pressing pain in the region of the neck of the bladder, especially when walking and after eating, when not urinating, which latter is without pain, 1. [490.]
Burning itching in the neck of the bladder, with flatulent distension of the abdomen, which causes sexual desire, 1.
Urethra.
While urging at stool much mucus (prostatic fluid) from the urethra (after five days), 1.
Biting burning in the forepart of the urethra, while urinating, 1.
A stitch in the forepart of the urethra, which ends in a tearing, soon after dinner, 1.
Coarse stitches in the urethra, while walking (after five hours), 1.
Scraping-tearing pain in the middle of the urethra, in the evening, while sitting (after one hour), 1.
Scraping, scratching, and scratching-tearing pain in the middle of the urethra, in the evening while lying in bed (after five hours), 1.
Crawling and burning in the urethra, especially on urinating, 15.
Itching in the forepart of the urethra (after two hours), 1.
Micturition.
Urine passes more frequently than usual, 15.* [500.]

Violent, pulling, tearing, pressive pain in successive paroxysms in the root of the penis, especially while walking, disappearing while leaning against the small of the back, when standing, 1.
(Every shock of the cough shoots with a painful sensation into the penis, like a sudden forcing of blood.), 1.

RESPIRATORY ORGANS
Larynx.
Scratching in the upper part of the larynx, as from heartburn (in the evening, after eight hours), 1.
Uninterrupted provocation to a hacking cough in the larynx (not tickling), in the evening after lying down; it does not disappear on coughing, but only suppressing the cough (after five hours), 1.*
Desire to cough, in the evening after lying down, on falling asleep (after six hours), 1.
Very short, frequently very dry cough, the provocation to which is in the pit of the throat, as from inspired feathery dust, not relieved by coughing; but more excited the more he allows himself to cough; especially worse towards evening, 1.*

EXTREMITIES IN GENERAL
Objective.
Jerkings and isolated twitchings in the limbs (after ten and twelve hours), 1.
*Single jerkings of the limbs, on falling asleep (after three hours), 1.
Clonic cramp of all the limbs, like a stiffness, 1.
A transient pressure as with a hard substance, painful as a bruise, here and there in the periosteum of the middle of the long bones (not in the joints), during the day, but especially while lying upon either side, in the evening in bed, disappearing on lying upon the back (after twenty and thirty-six hours), 1 . Pain as from a sprain or dislocation of the shoulder, hip, and knee-joints (after eight hours), 1. [610.]

SUPERIOR EXTREMITIES
The arm of the side upon which he lies falls asleep (after eight hours), 1.
Intolerable (indescribable) pain in the bones and joints of the arm upon which he lies, in the morning in bed; it only disappears on lying on the other painless side (after twenty hours), 1 . Intolerable (indescribable) pain in the bones and joints of the arm upon which he is not lying, in the evening in bed; it only disappears on lying upon the painful arm (after twelve hours), 1.
Pulsating drawing, extending from the upper arm to the wrist and fingers, 1.
Shoulder.
Twitching jerking in the deltoid muscle (after twenty-four hours), 1.
Rheumatic pain in the shoulder-joint, or a feeling as if bruised, while walking in the open air (after ten hours), 1.

Painful drawing in the whole left leg, in bed before falling asleep; it disappears after awhile but returns with increased violence, 3.

Intermitting deep internal pressure above the left hip, 3.

Sticking pain in the hip-joint and in the knee, when walking, on moving the foot, from 4 to 8 A.M. (after eight hours), 1.
Thigh.
The thigh and leg fall asleep, while sitting after eating (after five hours), 1.
Tension of the lower leg, extending above the knee, with heaviness of the limbs, 1.
Deep violent pressure in the middle of the left thigh, 3.

Knee.
Cracking and creaking in the knees (after two hours), 1.
He was unable to walk, but was obliged to remain sitting, because when walking the knee was involuntarily drawn upward (after half an hour), 2.
Trembling of the whole body, for three hours, with itching and frightful convulsive jerkings, so that he was scarcely able to remain upon his legs; these were most violent in the jaws, so that the mouth was distorted as in laughing, immediately, 5 . [From a scruple. -Hahnemann.]
Seized with a trembling all over his body that continued three hours (immediately); together with twitching and spasms, 26.

So great sleepiness that he was obliged to go to bed by 9 o'clock and slept soundly the whole night, yet in the morning he was very tired and apathetic, which condition continued the whole day (seventh day), 10a.
Coldness and chilliness, especially in the posterior portions of the body; they are, however, relieved immediately in a warm room, or by a warm stove (after six hours), 1 . [The febrile coldness, relieved by external warmth, is characteristic of Ignatia. -Hahnemann.]*

Pressive headache in one-half of the brain, while walking in the open air, aggravated by talking or reflecting (after two hours), 1.
Occiput.
Pain in the occiput just above the mastoid process, at times involving the auditory apparatus, when the hearing seemed to be blundered, in the afternoon (second day), 17.
Pressure and pressing pain in the right half of the occiput, lasting till he fell asleep (sixteenth day), 10.
Pressive pain in the occiput, more on the right side (sixth day), 10a.

It becomes dim before one eye in the evening, while reading, as if tears were in it which he should wipe away; there is, however, no water in it, 1.
Zigzag and serpentine, white flickering at one side of the field of vision (soon after dinner), (after thirty hours), 1.*
A circle of white glittering, flickering zigzags about the point of vision; therewith the letters to which one directs the eye became invisible, but those next to them were distinct (after sixteen hours), 1 . On reading, the letters to which the eyes were directed became invisible, but those in the immediate vicinity seemed more distinct than ever; it seemed as if the middle of the word was marked with chalk, while the beginning and end of a long word, or the first and last letters of a monosyllabic word, had become more distinct, lasting about an hour, 29.
Copious secretion of saliva, 14 ; (sixth day), 12.*
Secretion of a large quantity of saliva for twelve hours (fourth days), 13.
Very great accumulation of saliva (soon after 5 grains); this continued to recur during the forenoon, and was accompanied by very distressing nausea (sixth day), 9a.
Tobacco-smoke tastes bitter (after five hours), 1.
While eating, drinking, and smoking, the good taste of these things suddenly disappears as soon as the actual need is satisfied, or it changes to an unpleasant taste, and one is unable to take the least particle more of them, though there remains a kind of hunger and thirst, 1.

Sore throat; sticking in it when not swallowing, and even somewhat while swallowing; the more he swallows however the more it disappears; if he swallows anything solid, like bread, it seems as though the sticking entirely disappeared, 1.
Sore throat; tearing pain in the larynx, much aggravated by swallowing, breathing, and coughing (after one hour and a half), 1.
Tonsils.
Ignatia seems to have irritated the tonsils and salivary glands; there was increased turgescence of the former (second day), 8.
Pharynx.
Crawling in the pharynx (after one and two hours), 1.
Swallowing.
On eating, there was some difficulty in swallowing food or drink, 8.
He was unable to swallow bread, it seemed too dry, 1.* [280.]

Peculiar tensive pain, not in the stomach; but in the upper abdomen; it seemed as though the walls of the abdomen were pushed downward and the diaphragm upward; this pain seemed worse in the region of the spleen, whence it extended backward towards the vertebral column; it was alternately worse in different places; this pain disappeared entirely for four hours but returned at 3 P.M., and became quite violent towards evening, when it extended upward into the chest, where it at times became an acute burning, which, however, was worse in the vertebral column in the region of the ganglion cœliacum; during these attacks there were frequent eructations of air, always, followed by transient relief of the pain, 16a.
Tormented by flatulence, which even presses upon the bladder (after ninety-six hours), 1.
A kind of colic, a contractive pain from both sides just beneath the ribs (after a quarter of an hour), 1.
