Over Frans Vermeulen

Frans Vermeulen was born in 1948 in Den Helder, Holland. He worked as an elementary-school teacher from 1970 to 1978 and trained in homeopathy from 1976 to 1983, opening his own practice in 1979. He is recognised throughout the homeopathic world as an author, lecturer and authority on materia medica.

In 1990 Vermeulen was appointed managing director, teacher and administrator of The School of Homeopathy in Holland, and he is a patron of the (UK) School of Homeopathy. Alongside his own writing he has translated homeopathic works by authors including Kent, Allen, Tyler and Vithoulkas, helping to bring classical literature to a wider readership.

His reputation rests on a series of major materia medica reference works. After Kindertypes in de Homeopathie (Children Types in Homeopathy, 1985), he produced Synoptic Materia Medica I (1992) and Synoptic Materia Medica II (1996), the latter focusing on small remedies and on the relationships between remedy source substances and their drug pictures. His Concordant Materia Medica (1994, enlarged in 1997 to incorporate Hering's Guiding Symptoms) consolidated multiple classical authors into a single cross-referenced volume; it was published by Emryss Publishers, with Ary Bakker credited as editor.

From the early 2000s Vermeulen extended materia medica toward source-based and kingdom-based study. Prisma (2002) incorporates data from non-homeopathic sources as reference material and as a source of potential symptoms, followed by Kingdom Monera and Viruses (2005) and Kingdom Fungi (2007). In 2011 he completed the four-volume Plants, co-authored with his wife Dr. Linda Johnston, MD, DHt, covering over 2,000 plant remedies in 149 families and organised according to the APG II botanical classification. He lives and works with Linda Johnston in California.
