MIND

• Fretful, morose mood, with inability to fix my attention upon the work in which I was usually very much interested; also frequently answered in a distracted way, and was in general disinclined to talk (fifth day), 3b.

• Ill-humor, discomfort, 8.

HEAD

• Head very much confused the whole day (third day), 9.

• (Violent headache, becoming almost intolerable; it involved the whole anterior part of the skull as far as the vertex; every motion caused a sensation of swashing, with distressing throbbing and beating in the bloodvessels, not at all relieved by cold applications, and only momentarily by ice, associated with intolerance of the light, redness of the white of the eye, stoppage of the nose, sore throat, yellow expectoration, burning hot fever and prostration (first night); on the next day the headache had disappeared, except on stooping there was still a sensation as though it might return; the difficulty of swallowing was greatly diminished, and in the afternoon I began to perspire; on the left shoulder there were transient gnawing, paralytic pains, aggravated by motion and pressure; the secretion of urine was increased, with more desire for water and also appetite; on the third day there was still some difficulty of swallowing, and persistent pain in the left shoulder, with continuance of the thirst; the urine passed this day showed an iridescent film; on the fourth day the symptoms had almost entirely disappeared, and a new symptom occurred, transient pain in the urethra while urinating; on the next day, there appeared hydroa febrilis on the lips), 6.
• Forehead.
• Pressure in the right frontal eminence, in the evening (second day), 3a.
• Pressive pain in the forehead, on rising, at 6 A.M. (second day), 1b.
• Drawing pain in the right frontal eminence, unaffected by position or motion, extending towards the right temple, soon after waking, at 6.30 A.M. (fifth day), 3.
• Drawing pain in the right frontal eminence, returning on walking out of doors, aggravated by pressure with the hand; afterwards it suddenly disappears and reappears as a drawing in the occiput towards the nape, where it continues for two hours; when it immediately disappears on going into the open air (fifth day), 3. EYE

• White of the eyes, especially of the left eye, yellow (second day), 1b.
• Sensation as though vision were remarkably clear and distinct (though the day was cloudy and dull), (fourth day), 3a.
• Flickering before the eyes (fifth day), 9.

EAR

• Stitches through the left ear at times, in the forenoon (first day), 4.
• Sticking continued, now in the right, now in the left ear (third night), 4.
• Sticking in the right ear on entering the house, in the afternoon, at first transient, afterwards violent and persistent, the pain extended from within outward, and lasted several minutes (sixth day), 3.
• Violent stitches in both ears, obliging him to cry out, 5. [40.]
• The left ear seems stopped, at times (third day), 3b.
• Roaring in the ears, lasting a long time, 8.

NOSE

• Excessive catarrh, with frequent inclination to sneeze; great stoppage of the nose, with at times discharge of tenacious yellow mucus (fourth day), 6a.

• Great dryness of the nose, in the morning, gradually disappearing until in the afternoon much nasal mucus was discharged (third day), 3c.

FACE

• Painful drawing in the right side of the cheek, involving the whole right infraorbital region; the pain extended to the last upper molars; this pain continued during the night, with fever, consisting of alternations of heat and coldness, with accelerated pulse, that prevented sleep; on the next day, the right side of the face was swollen, very sensitive to the air and to the slightest pressure, 11b.
• Slight burning on the lips, immediately after the dose (fourth day), 3c.
• Lips very dry (first night), 4.
• Dryness of the lips and palate, in the afternoon and night (fifth day), 4.

MOUTH

• Teeth.
• Violent drawing pain in both the upper and lower incisors, with heat of the cheek, that was somewhat swollen (second day), 4. [50.]
• Acute drawing pain in the upper sound incisors, in the evening (second day), 3a.
• Drawing pains in the teeth of the right upper jaw, extending to the temple and ear; on attempting to chew there was a feeling of tension in the right articulation of the lower jaw; these symptoms disappeared after an hour, on going out (fourth day); they returned at 10 A.M., with great intensity, and continued to recur periodically (frequently intermitting for a few minutes) until going to sleep, in the evening (fifth day), 2b.
• A pressive pain in the sound teeth of the right side of the lower jaw, in the evening (sixth day), 3.
• Frequent sticking in the right upper teeth, always in the morning (tenth to twelfth day), 2b.
• Sensitiveness of the upper incisors (after 30 drops), 2a.
• Tongue.
• Tongue coated (first night), 6.
• A sensation at the root of the tongue and on the soft palate, at first cool, afterwards burning, in the evening (sixth day), 3b.
• General Mouth.
• Opening the mouth became more and more difficult, so that in the evening of the ninth day he could scarcely get the little finger between the teeth, associated with stitches in the throat on swallowing; on examining the throat, there was only some redness of the posterior wall in the pharynx and right side of the palate, on the latter of which were two small ulcers; the difficulty of swallowing had disappeared on the thirteenth day, but the difficulty of opening the mouth remained the same; the ulcers had entirely disappeared; about noon, on the thirteenth day, there appeared without cause, a digging pain in the right upper teeth, with increased secretion of saliva and feeling of soreness of the gum of both sides; on the fourteenth day the sticking pain extended to the right articulation of the jaw, and the burrowing pain in the upper jaw continued and extended to the lower jaw, together with a sensation in the angle of the right side of the jaw, as though I would get a tooth at this point; on the sixteenth day the pain in the articulation of the jaw was very slight, though the gum was still painful to the touch, after which it entirely disappeared, 2.
• Opening the mouth painful; could not open it as wide as usual; swallowing caused a sticking sensation, especially in the right side of the neck (eighth day), .

THROAT

• Scraping in the throat, 8.
• Scraped sensation in the throat, that provoked frequent hawking, which relieved for the moment, in the morning (third day), 3c.
• Transient stitches in the throat, at 5 P.M. (second day), 3b.
• Sensation of dryness in the throat, with thirst, not relieved by a glass of water, in the evening (second day), 3c.
• Burning, as from much pepper, gradually extending from the tongue through the fauces and œsophagus to the stomach, lasting from 6 A.M. to 4 P.M., when it began to diminish, but was still felt the next morning, immediately, 1. [70.]
• Burning in the throat (fifth night), 4.
• Sensation as though a morsel were sticking in the throat when eating, at noon (fifth day), 3a.
• Fauces and Pharynx.
• Disagreeable scraped feeling in the fauces, immediately after a dose (third day), 9.

• Feeling of tension in the pharynx when drinking, with a disagreeable tickling in both ears, that obliges frequent hawking, in the evening (fourth day), 3a.
• Acute pressure in the pharynx, that on swallowing became a burning, not affected by external pressure, at 5 P.M.; the sensation continued to increase till 9 A.M., when it became a sensation of swelling, after which it soon disappeared (fifth day), 3a.

STOMACH

• Appetite and Thirst.
• Appetite great; I ate an unusual amount and with unusual haste, though without a feeling of satiety; on rising from a meal there was a distressing pressure in the stomach, as from a heavy weight, with desire to drink a great deal; after taking a few steps there was a sensation as if something were pulling in the stomach, that caused a feeling of tension in the œsophagus (sixth day), 3c.

• Violent griping about the umbilicus, with urgent desire for stool, half an hour after dinner; evacuation of a dark pasty stool, followed by relief of the pain in the abdomen, in the afternoon (third day), 2c.
• Griping in the abdomen, at times violent, at times slight, mostly about the umbilicus, sometimes associated with great urging to stool (fifth day), 3c.
• Violent griping about the umbilicus, with painful rumbling and the evacuation of gas from the bowels, and at times desire for stool, while walking about in the open air, in the forenoon; towards 11 A.M. the desire for stool was very great, and gas was occasionally emitted, with transient relief; the desire for stool increased, till at noon it became so violent that I was obliged to return to the house, when there followed an evacuation which was almost black, with painful griping and rumbling in the abdomen, and violent painful dragging in the rectum; after the stool there was great weakness of the lower extremities, coldness of the abdomen, and cold sweat on the forehead (sixth day), 3c.
• Crawling about the umbilicus, gradually disappearing along the rectus muscle towards the symphysis pubis, in the evening, after going to bed (third day), 3b.
• General Abdomen.
• Rumbling in the abdomen, followed by three serous evacuations, with burning in the anus (after 1 drop), 9.
• Rumbling in the abdomen (third and fifth days), 9.
• Rumbling in the abdomen, without emission of flatus (fifth day), 9.
• Painless rumbling and movements in the abdomen, with a flatulent sensation, in the evening (sixth day), 3c.

RECTUM AND ANUS

• Painful pressure in the rectum, with constant griping in the abdomen, followed by a profuse dark, pasty stool, succeeded by burning and tenesmus in the anus, that lasted nearly half an hour, at noon; the desire for stool returned and was sudden, but in spite of painful pressure in the rectum no stool, only a little mucus and gas were evacuated, though the burning in the anus lasted a quarter of an hour (fifth day), 3c.
• Discharge of white mucus from the anus, provoking scratching of the anus, and followed by some burning (third day), 1a.
• Desire for stool followed by copious watery and pasty stools, evacuated suddenly and with a noise, without previous pain in the abdomen, at 7 A.M. (fourth day), 3c.
• Sudden sensation as of diarrhœa, with urgent desire for stool and a quite painless, dark pasty evacuation, in the morning (fifth day), 3c.
• Sudden sensation of diarrhœa, followed by a desire for stool and evacuation of a scanty, light ochre-yellow, pasty stool, with relief of the pain, in the morning (sixth day), 3c.

STOOL. [120.]

• Pasty, yellowish-brown stool, at 9 P.M., followed after an hour by a similar evacuation, with griping pain in the umbilical region (first day), 1b.
• Watery stool mixed with mucus, preceded by rumbling and griping in the transverse colon, at 4.45 A.M. (second day), 1b.
• Stool at first hard, afterwards diarrhœa-like, of a rusty-brown color, followed by tenesmus and burning in the anus (seventh day), 3.
• There was no stool for four days after the diarrhœa; however, the stool which occurred subsequent to this constipation was perfectly normal, 3c.
• Stool at first pasty, then liquid (fifth day), 9.
• (Evacuation of two round worms with the stool), 5.
• The stool, which was usually daily, omitted for five days, when there was a bluish, nodular stool, evacuated with great effort (after third day), 1a.

URINARY ORGANS

• Pressure in the bladder, immediately followed by a desire to urinate, and on arising to attend to it, cutting pain seeming to extend from the root of the penis into the base of the bladder; the pain was sudden and violent and obliged me to sit perfectly still for a while, and when it disappeared there remained a sensation of heaviness in the bladder, which disappeared after urinating, in the evening (eighth day), 3c.
• Violent burning in the navicular fossa of the urethra, during and after micturition in the morning; micturition was scanty and unsatisfactory (fifth day), 3.
• Frequent sudden desire to urinate, so that I could scarcely reach the closet, but only a few drops of urine were passed, followed by a sensation as though the bladder were full, in the afternoon; in the evening there was copious micturition, with relief of the distressing sensation (sixth day), 3. • Urgent desire to urinate, followed by scanty micturition five times during the day; during the afternoon, however, there was copious micturition (ninth day), 3c.
• Increased secretion of urine, especially at night, 5.
• Urine somewhat increased during the proving, especially in the morning, so that I always woke with some painfulness in the region of the bladder, that disappeared after the copious emission of urine, 2.
• Urine scanty, darker than usual (fifth day), 9.
• Urine dark, with a reddish-yellow sediment (fifth day), 9.

SEXUAL ORGANS

• Transient drawing sticking extending along the right side of the penis and along the urethra (ninth day), 3c.
• Violent erection (third night), 1a.

RESPIRATORY ORGANS

• (Violent bronchial catarrh came on at night, but could not be ascribed to the drug), 8.

CHEST

• Slight burning at the articulation of the clavicle with the sternum, in the morning (second day), 3c.
• Several coarse stitches in the pectoralis major muscle, so that I held my breath and waited till they disappeared, at 6 P.M. (third day), 3c.

• Stitches between the fourth and fifth ribs of the right side, 8.
• Transient stitches in the right side (sixth day), 3a.
• Drawing pain accompanied by transient stitches at the point of insertion of the serratus magnus muscle of the right side of the thorax, especially painful on turning the body (second day), 11b.
• Pain in the right side of the chest continued (second and third days); on the fourth day it extended up to the right scapula and thence to the nape of the neck, becoming so violent in the night that I was compelled to jump out of bed and cry out; it seemed as though a number of needles were sticking into the head until the head was turned towards the side, associated with profuse perspiration, painful inspiration, and excessive heat of the head; the application of the mustard paste aggravated the pain, but it was gradually relieved after the application of ice, but for a long time motion of the head was interfered with, 11b.
• Slight tensive pain in the region of the fourth rib, possibly caused by the uncomfortable position in which he was lying, immediately disappearing on rising (fourth day), 1a.
• Slight painlike tension in the anterior wall of the chest, especially on the right side, in the region of the fourth to sixth ribs, on deep inspiration; on the next day the same pain continued, but seemed to extend over a larger surface, never involving the whole wall of the thorax at once, occurring now in the anterior, now in the posterior portion, or at times in the right or left side, or even at two different places at the same time; it was most frequent and most violent in the forepart of the chest, on the right side between the fourth and sixth ribs, and on the posterior portion of the left side of the scapula, most rarely felt on the right side posteriorly; from the anterior right side of the chest it at times extended backwards toward the sides, 7.

PULSE

• Pulse 110, hard and full, with the fever (first night), 6.

NECK AND BACK

• Stiffness in the nape of the neck (second day), 3a.
• A pressive-tensive pain in the nape of the neck and on both sides of the sterno-cleido-mastoid muscle, aggravated by every motion of the head, together with a sensation of stiffness (after three hours), 1a.
• Pressive, tensive pain in the cervical muscles, extending forward to the inner margin of the clavicle, and backwards over both scapulæ as far as their lower angles, lasting from 11 A.M. to 4 P.M. (third day), 1a. [150.]
• Slight drawing in the nape of the neck, similar to a sensation which I had experienced years before, caused by a strong cold wind, when riding in an open wagon, in the evening; did not disturb sleep at night, and entirely disappeared the next morning, but suddenly returned after walking in the open air for half an hour, and was more intense than the day previous, though at this time felt more on the right side (third day), 2.
• Drawing pain in the nape of the neck, gradually moving towards the right cheek (sixth day), 2.
• Transient dull stitches in the neck (fourth and fifth days), 3b.
• Coarse stitches shot from without inward, between the scapulæ, while walking, at 5 P.M.; these stitches frequently recurred, although I walked very slowly, then I stood still, taking a deep and slow breath, when they disappeared, but returned immediately on expiration; they lasted with some intermissions till 6 P.M., when they suddenly gave place to a violent stitch, extending from the tip of the left shoulder through the chest to the hip, and thence into the knee-joint (third day), 3a.

EXTREMITIES

• Sticking and at times drawing in all the joints, but especially in the right elbow, in the afternoon, while sitting (first day), 4.
• Drawing pains, with coldness in the upper and lower extremities (fourth day), 4.
• Transient drawing and tearing in the upper and lower extremities, especially about the joints (fourth and fifth days), 3b.
• A paralytic drawing alternately in the right forearm and right leg, at times also in the left knee, in the latter place it was accompanied at times with a feeling of coldness, in the evening (eighth day), 3c.
• Transient stitches in the joints of the extremities (tenth day), 3c.
• Sensation of paralysis in the joints of the fingers and toes (tenth day), 3b. [160.]
• Feeling of great prostration in all the limbs, preventing sleep, 8.

SUPERIOR EXTREMITIES

• The right upper extremity seems paralyzed (eighth day), 2.
• Pain in the whole left upper extremity (second day), 6c.
• Shoulder.
• Paralyzed sensation in the right shoulder (fourth and fifth days), 3b.
• Feeling of stiffness and rigidity in the right shoulder, on undressing, at 10 P.M. (fifth day), 3.
• Sudden paralyzed sensation in the right shoulder and wrist, suddenly appearing and disappearing (fifth day), 3.
• Violent pain, as from excessive weariness, in both shoulders, on attempting to rise, in the morning; an extraordinary loss of power; on moving the arm it seemed as though it were out of place, out of joint; this sensation continued till nearly noon; the sensation of weariness, however, continued during the whole day (sixth day), 3.
• Feeling of lameness in the right shoulder, that on moving the joint amounted to a pain, as if sprained, in the morning (sixth day), 3c.
• Pain, as from a sprain, in the right shoulder-joint, on moving the arm, in the morning (seventh day), 3c.
• Acute pain, as from great fatigue, in the right shoulder; the first movement of the arm was very painful; could scarcely be raised to a right angle, but after a few minutes, on continuing to move it, the pain disappeared, and there remained only a sensation of weariness, in the forenoon (eighth day), 3c. • Violent sticking pain in the region of the right shoulder, 5.
• Pain in the right shoulder, as if sprained (second day), 3a.

• Drawing-tearing pains in the joints of the upper and forearm, and also in the fingers of both hands, not aggravated by pressure or touch; all the other joints of the body remained unaffected; it was noticed that the right upper and forearm, and the joints of the right fingers, were more frequently and more violently affected than those of the left side, .

INFERIOR EXTREMITIES. [190.]

• Painful sensation in the lower extremities, followed by violent and painful cramp in the muscles of the calves, woke me from sleep about midnight; not relieved by stretching out the extremities; the cramps, indeed, disappeared soon after remaining perfectly quiet (second day), 3c.
• Feeling of weakness in the lower extremities, in the morning (sixth day), 3c.
• Sensation of weakness in the lower extremities (sixth day), 3c.
• Hip and Thigh.
• Transient stitches in the left hip, so that walking or raising the foot was difficult, causing a kind of limping; both slight touch and violent pressure caused pain, 5.
• Pain in the hip-joint on moving the right lower extremity, gradually diminishing on walking for a long time (sixth day), 2.
• Burning in the right hip-joint, in the forenoon (fifth day), 4.
• Cramp in the adductors of the right thigh, returning whenever the thigh was abducted; the experiment was repeated four times with the same result, in the evening (fifth day), 3b.
• Painful cramps in the adductors, whenever the thigh or leg was flexed, at night (second day), 3c.
• Tension of the hamstrings, when walking (sixth day), 3c.
• A sticking-tearing pain, taking its origin in the region of the right trochanter, and extending along the outer side of the thigh to the knee, gradually disappearing on moving about (sixth day), 2b. [200.]
• Transient but decided tearing and painless jerking in the muscles of both thighs and legs (third day), 3b.
• Drawing pains in the muscles of the right thigh, soon followed by weariness of the extremity; this weary sensation was noticed immediately on going out, in the afternoon, and on returning, in the evening. I was as much exhausted as if I had walked several miles (fifth day), 2.
• Drawing pains in the right thigh, 8.
• Drawing in the fascia of the right thigh, 8.
• Transient stitches in the thighs, with a feeling of coldness in it daily, 8.
• Knee and Leg.
• Tension in the tendons of the hollow of the left knee, in consequence of which I frequently made a misstep (fifth day), 3c.

SKIN

• Transient prickling in the palm of the left hand (fifth day), 3.
• Crawling on the left little finger, at first on all the phalanges, but after lasting a few minutes it became confined to inner surface of the third phalanx, and continued, in spite of continued rubbing and pressure, for an hour, when it suddenly disappeared, in the afternoon (third day), 3b.
• Formication on the ball of the left thumb, in the evening (fifth day), 3b.

SLEEP. [250.]

• Inclination to sleep, so that I was obliged to undertake one thing after another in order to keep awake, which was especially noticeable, since I went to bed earlier than usual the previous evening, and felt quite refreshed in the morning on rising; in the evening, I was wide awake, and worked with great vigor and clearness (seventh day), 3c.
• Woke about midnight, and remained awake for six hours; woke, in the morning, free from all symptoms and quite well (sixth day), 4.
• Frequent waking from sleep (second day), 9.
• Sleep, at night, much disturbed (third night), 9.
• Sleep restless (third night), 4.
• Unable to fall asleep for a long time on account of a variety of thoughts; sleep, through the whole night, was restless and interrupted, with much talking and groaning (sixth day), 3.
• Great sleeplessness (fifth day), 9.

FEVER

• Chilliness.
• Sudden violent shaking chill, with chattering of the teeth, waking from sleep, and lasting twenty minutes, followed by burning dry heat over the whole body, at midnight (first night), 6. [260.]
• Constant chilliness through the whole abdomen, with warm face and cold hands; this sensation of chilliness was aggravated by the warmth of the stove, but entirely disappeared on moving about in the open air, in the evening (ninth day), 3c.
• Frequent chilliness, in the afternoon (fifth day), 4.
• Became very cool; was obliged to go to bed, where I fell asleep, in the evening (fifth day), 4.
• Coldness on waking, in the morning, continuing even after breakfast, 11.
• Inability to get warm, in bed, preventing sleep (third night), 3b.
• Inability to get warm, in spite of active exercise, in the open air, or even while sitting in a warm room; there was an uncomfortable feeling of chilliness in the abdomen; felt best when sitting perfectly quiet (fifth day), 3c.
• Coldness over the back, and heat of the hands; could not get warm in spite of being in a heated room (second day), 4.
• Heat and Sweat.
• Sudden heat of the head, followed by profuse perspiration on the scalp, lasting only eight minutes; after the perspiration dried up, the forehead was cold to touch, at 9 A.M. (third day), 1a.
• Some fever, in the evening, 8.
• (A catarrhal fever developed, that lasted two days), 8. [270.]
• Sour perspiration, at night (fifth day), 9.
• Profuse perspiration on the scalp, with coldness of the forehead (second and third nights), 1a.
• Perspiration on the right foot and both hands, though on no other part of the body, in the afternoon (fourth day), 2.
• Perspiration on the right foot, so that the stocking was completely soaked; the left foot remained quite dry, 2 . [I was not accustomed to suffer from perspiration of the feet, even in midsummer, except on walking for several hours, which, however, was not the case at this time.]

• ( Morning ), On waking, indolent; dulness of the head; 6 A.M., on rising, pressive pain in forehead; 6.30 A.M., drawing pain in right frontal eminence; dryness of the nose; sticking in right upper teeth; scraped sensation in throat; 6 A.M. to 4 P.M., burning in throat; 5 A.M., cutting pains in epigastrium; 4.45 A.M., rumbling and griping in transverse colon, followed by watery stool; in a warm room, feeling of coldness through abdomen; desire for stool; secretion of urine; on attempting to rise, pain in both shoulders; lameness in the right shoulder; on moving arm, pain in right shoulder; stitch along inner side of right forearm; feeling of weakness in lower extremities; drawing in the left knee; 6.30 A.M., wakened from sleep by cramp in left calf; on waking, sensation of general discomfort; coldness; 9 A.M., heat of head and perspiration on scalp.
• ( Forenoon ), Pain in forehead; stitches through ear; while walking, griping about umbilicus, with rumbling, etc; 11 A.M. to 4 P.M., pain in cervical muscles; trembling of the hands; burning in right hip-joint.
• ( Noon ), Great desire for stool, with pressure in rectum and griping in abdomen.
• ( Afternoon ), 5 P.M., pain in temples; on entering house, sticking in right ear; discharge of nasal mucus; dryness of the lips and palate; 5 P.M. transient stitches in throat; sudden desire to urinate; 6 P.M., stitches in pectoralis major muscle; while sitting, sticking in all the joints. pain on inner side of forearm; 5 P.M., while walking, burning in outer condyle of left wrist; weakness of fingers of right hand; 6 P.M., while sitting, burning in the right knee; crawling in the left little finger; chilliness; perspiration of right foot and both hands.
• ( Toward evening ), Headache.
• ( Evening ), Pressure in right frontal eminence; pain in right side of forehead; pain in upper incisors; pain in sound teeth of right lower jaw; sensation at root of tongue, first cold, then burning; dryness in throat; after going to bed, crawling about umbilicus; rumbling in abdomen; paralytic drawing, alternating in right forearm and leg and left knee; 10 P.M., on undressing, feeling stiffness and rigidity in right shoulder; pain in upper arm; sticking and drawing in the knees and right shoulder; tearing in malleoli; drawing in the feet, with desire to stretch them out; burning in sole of left foot; stitch in left great toe; formication on ball of right thumb; very cool; fever.
• ( Night ), Dryness of the lips and palate; vomiting; secretion of urine; pain in right side of chest; sticking in malleoli of ankle; disturbed sleep; sour perspiration.
