Volume I — Special Symptomatology
(Indian Acalypha.)
A plant found in the East Indies. Proved by Dr. Tonnere, of Calcutta. An indigenious species grows in the south, the A. Yirginiana, used by the people in asthma and croup.
Botanical Description. — We have three American species, homely weeds, growing in fields and open places, found in flower in July and September; one or two feet high, stems thick or rather hairy, often turning purplish in autumn.
Officinal Preparations. — Tincture of the plant with alcohol by maceration ; dilutions.
Analogues. — Arnica(?) IIamamelis(?) Ipecacaanha(f) C a Icarea carbon- '.ca(?) Millefo lium( f)

Respiratory Organs.
- Dry cough, followed by spitting of blood.
° Haemoptysis. The patient had tuberculous affection of the upper portion of the left lung, with expectoration of blood; in the morning, pure blood; in evening, dark lumps of clotted blood; the fits of coughing were very violent at night. In this case the haemoptysis did not return. (Dr. Tonnere.)
° Haemoptysis in three cases of consumption, in the last stage. (Ib.)
° Haemoptysis, with loss of voice; the bleeding stopped, but the disease progressed. (Thomas.)
° Haemorrhage from the lungs, a severe case, after other remedies had failed. (Holcombe.)

° Leucorrhoea, sometimes thick, sometimes watery, in a consumptive patient. (Neidhard.)
Volume II — Special Therapeutics
Ainslie, in his “ Materia Medica Indica,” says the Indian (Tamool) name for this plant is Koopamanie, and observes that the Hakeems (native physicians) prescribe it in consumption. Dr. Tonnere, of Calcutta, claims to have cured some pulmonary symptoms, viz. :
JESCU.LUS hippocastanum.
Dry cough, followed by spitting of blood. He, as well as Drs. Thomas and Holcombe, asserts that it will arrest haemoptysis after all other remedies fail. It is indicated in expectoration of pure blood in the morning, and dark lumps of clotted blood in the evening. It cures this kind of haemorrhage, but not when caused by tuberculosis of the lungs.
