Volume I — Appendix

Officinal Preparation. — Trituration of the poison from the cutaneous glands, obtained by irritating the Rana Bufo.

Head.

Inclination to be angry, to bite. Stupor. Giddiness, with heaviness of the head. Headache in the forehead and on the vertex; the parts are tender to the touch, especially in the evening. One-sided headache (right side), relieved by bleeding of the nose. Headache after breakfast, aggravated by light and noise, accompanied by cold feet and palpitation of the heart. Profuse perspiration on the head.

Eyes red, injected, itching, swollen. Appearance of objects as if there were a veil before the eyes. Sneezing in the evening when going to bed. Bleeding of the nose relieving the headache.

Pace.

Pimples on the upper lip, with coryza. Momentary hot flushes of the face. Erysipelas.

Mouth.

Stuttering. Black tongue. Fetid odor from the mouth. Mucus descends from the nose into the posterior nares. Dryness in the throat, impeding deglutition (morning).

Stomach.

Faintness from emptiness of the stomach. Eructations, as from rotten eggs. Vomiting after drinking. After eating, irresistible sleepiness. Colic pain after drinking milk and after smoking tobacco.

Bowels.

Stools white. Constipation, with coldness of the body and hot head. Hemorrhoidal tumors, with discharge of bright-red blood.

Urinary Organs. Frequent discharge of pale urine. Urine brown, of offensive odor. Burning pain in kidneys, with oppressed breathing and faintness.

Sexual Organs. Men. Inclination to touch the genitals. Women. Menstruation too early, with headache.

Chest.

Cough, with stitches in the larynx. Sensation as if the chest and the heart were constricted. Stitches in right side of chest. Palpitation of the heart after a meal, with nausea.

Extremities.

Upper. Large blisters in the palms of the hands. Panaritium, swelling blue-black around the nail, followed by suppuration. After a slight contusion of the finger, tearing pain, with redness along the whole arm, following the lymphatic

vessels into the armpit, causing there painful glandular swelling.

Lower. Cramps in the legs. Great weakness of the legs. Blisters on the soles of the feet.

Skin.

Yellow color of the skin. Small wounds suppurate much. Carbuncles. Ulcers, with burning pains.

Generalities.

Great weakness, fainting. Swelling of the whole body. Twitching of the muscles. Convulsions. * Epilepsy (after fright).

Volume II — Special Therapeutics

I have seen no reason to change the opinion I expressed in the third edition of “New Remedies,” relative to the trustworthiness of the provings of this and other medicines of which Houat has

given pathogeneses. It would be better for our school had they never seen the light.

I have tried the Bufo in several cases of epilepsy when it seemed indicated, but I never saw any such brilliant results as have been recorded by Dr. Holcombe and others.
