h, " Wishing tu take a drink uf water before retiring to bed, I took the tumbler which had contained tny forenoon doM, and rinsed It well. I then drew and drank one or two tumblers of wafer. I had not taken it a m. before I wa^ affected with the chest symptoms already described, w^ith (in addition) aching of throat and violent constrictive feeling; pain in head, extremely rapid pulse, with intermission about every and or 3rd pulsation ; pain in region of heart, and at same time in anterior muscles of r. thigh, also in back about 8th dorsal vertebra. The pulse became fuller and slower, but seldom went more than 1 or 3 pulsations without an intermis&ion ; bowels were opened 1 or 3 times, as if purged, with some abatement in violence of symptoms; mind much agitated, more from the distressing feelings than from fear of death, which nevertheless is present. 1. a. Dr. R. P. Mercer, July md, i860, took 10 dr. of astrung tinct. in water on rising from bed in m. and before bedtime. During greater part of d. slight uneasiness in ab<tomen, with nirabling and rolling about in bowels. 3rd. — zo dr. m. and e. as before. During d. slight numbncs6 and tingling in dorsum of L foot. 4th. — jo dr. m. and e. Same sensation in foot. 5th. — Much dreaming in n. (unusual) ; woke witli dull gnawin? pain in I. hand, extending from wriE'ts to ends ot Gngcrs, also intermittently in knee-joint. These pains were relieved by motion, but came on again during rest. Took 30 dr. in m. During d. pains in hand and knee continued, involving r. hand } also at times sharp sticking pain in r. elbow and over 1. eye, sometimes extending to top of head. 6ih. — Woke in m., after a n. of dreaming, with whitC'Coated tongue. Took 30 dr. in m. Pains continue, and affect also botn feet and hip.joinis ; pain in abdomen 'a still felt shortly after each dose; tearing down in bowels, before stool. 7th.^ — N. as last. Took 40 dr. No fresh symptoms. 8th.— Discontinued drug, being called away from home, but symptoms continued u before, those of head being somewhat aggravated. At times through d. vharp, shooting, stunning pain, as if struck by a hammer, at base of occiput immediately behind ear. After a few d, pains gradually subsided, lingering longest in hands and lower extremities

b. On 1 6th, 10 dr. ro. and e. Shortly after first do«e usual abdomiiial uneasineu. Pains in hands, knees, and ankles, which had not entirely left, were slightly agera. vated by noon, and again after c. dose. 17th. — 10 dr. in m. Pains in hands, ana in knees extending to ends ot toes, quite annoying ; pain in forepart of head, somet>mes subsiding, then coming on again with sharp shooting stitches, .ind gradually settling dowp into xXs former dull, heavy ache. In e., 1 5 dr. i8th. — At 6 a.m. 10 dr. In \ h. slight pain in abdomen ; pain in hands and feet continues; sharp shooting pains in elbow-joints, extending down to hands; darting pain in shoulder; heavy laming pain in r. groin. Sharp shooting pain in base ot occipital bone, extending up into head; ear-ache; pain in hypogastric region. At 9 p.m. took 15 dr., and retired for n. Pain woru: for a time after going to bed, but subsided after an h. or two, and sleep was good. igth. — At 6 a.m. 30 dr., and at 11 a.m. 35 dr. Nau^a and pain in abdomen after taking food ; sharp sticking pain in shoulder, extending along clavicle and sterno.mastoid ; sharp constrictive pain in and above elbow. At 9 p.m. 40 dr. Acute colicky pains in abdomen and in region of liver, zoth. — At 5 a.m., and at » and 9 p.m., 50 dr. Symptoms as yesterday, with addition ot twitching ptin at tiroes in muscles of chest. Appetite increased, aiu.— No medicine. Symptoms

as heretofore, land. — Symptoms considerably relieved, some altogether subsided, Pain^ in joints still quite percn>tible, especially those in hands and feet. These were the last to leave, contmuing still for several d. {Ihid.^ xviii, 14.7.)

3, Mrs. H— , zt. 14, mother of 3 children, now nursing one of « mo., leucopblegmatic temperament, mild and gooJ-heaneti disposition. Took $ d. of first dll. every 4 h., with idea that it might benefit infant's cntsta laccea. Next d. headache set in, principally over I. eye; she described it as a full, pressing feeling as if eye would be pushed out of head ; also pain in whole fronta.1 region, constant, wor^e on stooping. After taking drug for 4 a., at lo p.m. chilly sensation as if cold water had been poured over her, with continued thirM ; next d. felt chilly all over, particularly In back, .abdomen, chest, and head \ great (hin>t, feels as if ague would set in. The following n. &weat over entire body, with exception ot head } during sweat feels chilly internally, surface being warm. She now discontinued medicine. Next n. twtat again ^ and following d. discharge of bright red blood from vagina took place, and lasted all d. Next d. was free tram all symptoms j and being assured that medicine was innocuous took all left (about 60 dr.) at a single dose. This was followed immediately by continuous chilliness lasting all d., with great thirst and soreness in whole region of liver, and severe frontal headache j also great pain in r. shoulder, so that it was impossible to lift arm. In c. slight fever and at n. sweat. Next m., still headache and pain in shoulder, and liver so sore she could not He on r. side. Between i and 1 p.m. a regular paroxysm of chills and fever set in, with increase of same symptoms, followed by excessive perspiration j thirst during all stages. He now discontinued drug, as he could not do hu work. Pain in L lasted 3 — 4 d., as did a pain in r. temple. The tired feeling was the most prowii symptom from first to last, and was of both mind and body ; he wanted to sleep the time. 1. a. Miss M. W — , set. 17, lively and sensitive. April 39th, look 15 d?^ tinct. in m. Two h. after had dizzy feeling as if she would fall, not unpleasant if going to sleep, worse on lying down, it got less tovrards noon ; felt tired. Repa dose at D. 30th. — io dr. twice. Same dizziness and fatigue. May ist. — jj At. and c. Same, better in open air and from walking. From ind to 5th inclusive ■ increasing doses, feeling same vertigo and fatigue, till on 6th, having taken 75— M in m., she came to Dr. Crowther, reporting dull, confused, heavy feeling in hd fear that something might happen ; trembling and great excitement 4 tnouglit would faint; weak and tired, too much so to do anything; cold all over, cold n at times. Medicine was stopped, and she was quite well in a — 3 d., save for dl ness, which lasted (she thinks) about a week.

h. May »ist.— Took 15 dr. at n. 12nd. — 35 dr., m. and n. Severe pa« head, extending from nape of neck to forehead, accompanied by feeling as ii

She contin, creasing doses up to 17th, these symptoms persisting, but no new ones appeanj this d., taking 60 dr. m. and e., she had steady pain in r. side below ribs, extend thence to stomach, at times quite sharp. aSth. — 65 dr. m. and e. Loose grip stools. a9th. — Same stools. Again took 100 dr. at n. 17th. — Aching of legs above knees tQ calves. Took 80 dr. in e. i8th.— Headache on waking ; better after break- 19th. — Nausea at 9.45 a.m. soth. — No symptoms, aist.— Severe headache edtime and on waking next m., lasting till 5 p.m.

f. a3rd. — Began taking pellets of 3rd dil. every 3 h. Very tired and languid, le at n. a4th. — Aching and fatigue in calves, sfth. — Dull aching over 1. pie. s6th. — Heavy feeling on top and back of head ; aching In calves. S7th. — ■ymptoms. s8th.— Headache on vertex in m. ; tired and languid. a9th. — dache on waking; better after breakfast. 3otli.— -Same. July ist.— Two doses . Headache all d. and to 4th. — Two doses duly ; no effects. Discontinued -. Menses reappeared July 5th ; more pain than ever before, very severe in back.

b. 18th. — Prover had taken none of the drug for j week*, but had cjpetieB^^^^ more or less dulness and drowsiness ; also much thirst in e., not relieved by soda mf^'^ To-day took 3 doses of 3rd dil. in pellets, ajth. — Four doses. Lets sleepy tl»- "^^y, usual. Great sneezing at 9 ajn. (had hair cut day before), joth. — 4 ibf^^^tr Though up till I last n. awoke earlier than a<ual, feeling refreshed. July iit-**'^^A Yesterday nad much exertion, and did not ^et to bed till j.30 a.m., but do not IC^^^M tired this m. Took nap p.m., dreamed of being murdered, and awoke in hoinb> -^ k fright. Aching under I. scapula after supper, lasting all e., worse sitting. Took doses, and. — 4. doses. Slight aching under I. scapula at intervals during d., t in m. 3rd. — 3 doses. No symptoms. 4.th.— Hare lost much sleep last ] n^hvtA^^ not seem to teel it.

f. jth. — Took 3 pellets of 30th evtry 3 h. 6th. — 4. doses. Last n. had of great exertion. 7tn and Sth. — 4 doses. No effects. 9th. — Severe backache on awaking, did not want to move, but it was better when he got up. {ibid.)

i. Mr. J, L, P — , xt. 14, teacher, single, of quick sanguine disposition. Took one dose of 30th, June Sth, a.m. Thought his mind unusually bright and active ; every, thing seemed vivid. 9th. — 4 doses. Dull, lazy, drows}-, p.m. ; trifling headache on vertex, toth. — Extremely languid and weak in knees; dull frontal headache; very sleepy, particularly towards e. and indoors, nth. — One dose, a.m. Terrible headache, bearing and throbbing ; stretchy, sleepy feeling ; slight pain in small of hadt i thought he noticed slight tenderness in chest. He discontinued drug because he was "so sleepy and tired, and had to give up proving or business." The tired feeling (which he never experienced before or since) lasted j — 4 weeks. (XJi/.)

1. Mr. H. R. M — , tram dcspatcher, xt, ai, quiet and firm indisposition. Took t pellets of 30th every 3 b. from June S3rd, when he was drowsy all d., worw toward e., completely exhausted at n. ; but from 34th to a6th no effects were noticed. aTth.— Slight dull headache about 1 p.m., continuing till he got to sleep at n. Fkhb atth to July 6th no effects. — On 7th he took 3 pellets for a dose, when he again felt drowsy, and extremely weak and tired. 8th. — Feeling less tired, still sleepy. 9th, — Discontinued drug. Drowsiness lasted several d., but wore off gradually, (IhJ.)

IL Ftitmi^t. — 1. A woman of 30, for " bearing-down," hiul applied a burdock leaf acrMs hypegastrium, retaining it there from m.of 18th to e. of aoth May, 1SS4. Dr. KtATar saw her on m, ot aoth, and found whole abdomen covered with a wsiotiar eruption, most proaounced where Icai' had been applied ; here skin was io.

i^rea, covered with innumerable fine vesicles, and edges of patch were raided. Here was inttn.ve itching and burning, worse from warmth, at n., and in m., also kvated by rubbing, especially when light ; rubbing at one part itemed to increase ftation all over. A similar rash appeared on face. Next d. there was sticky disirge which stiffened the linen, and many of the vesicles had become pustules. For several d. discharge continued, and rash at last went off with much coarse desquama. tion. Face continued for some d. to get fresh crops of spots ; skin was stiff, and small scales appeared here and there. On June ist skin was so irritated here, with odcma about eyelids, that rhus was given, with advantage. It was scaled that the ipplication of either hot or cold water, even with the softest sponge, was felt like a sharp scrubbing-brush, and caused furious smarting, burning, and pricking. The Ust outburst on the face was on June ^rd, and in a few d. after this skin had regained it» integrity. {Hem. H'orU, 1887, p. jot.)
